The #1 Ranked Salon Suite for Two Years in a Row

For the second year in a row, Salons by JC will boast the honor of being ranked #1 in salon suites in the prestigious Entrepreneur Magazine “Franchise 500” list.  The innovator in the salon suite industry continues to gain momentum with the launch of their Empowering You programs and collaborations with key beauty professional industry players such as SalonCentric.

Coming off of 2018 with blow dryers blazing

In 2018, the team at Salons by JC dedicated their year to collaborating and adding key pieces to their already unique model, making a commitment to “Empower” their suite owners by providing them with not only the space to see their dream become a reality, but enhance their experience by giving them business building workshops, social media training, financial tips, and more.  The introduction of partnerships with Hello Gorgeous, WealthWave, Salon Suite Solutions, Stride Tax, Stride Health, and SalonCentric has created a dynamic synergy that keeps on growing.

100 locations by Summer 2019

With 93 locations currently operating, nationwide and in Canada, Salons by JC looks at adding 20 more locations by the end of 2019 and opening their 100th franchised location in the Summer.  This comes out to over 3,000 independent beauty professionals that are living the dream of being their own boss. “Being recognized as #1 Salon Suite for the second year in a row can be directly attributed to the outstanding efforts of our franchisees and dedication of our corporate staff. We have the same goal, providing beauty professionals the opportunity to positively change their lives,” said Drew Johnston, Salons by JC Vice President of Operations.

The Premiere Salon Suite

“Being ranked #1 last year was a great honor, holding that honor for two years shows that more people are recognizing Salons by JC as the premiere salon suite brand,” stated an ecstatic Salons by JC President, Steve Griffey.  Once again, Griffey stressed how our superior customer service is what sets us apart and keeps us ahead of the competition. “We have set a standard within our franchise. In order to remain a high-level competitor in our industry, we must have a commitment to excellence in customer service”.

Entrepreneur magazine determines the ranking for its Franchise 500 based on exceptional performance in several areas, including financial strength and stability, growth rate, system size, support and brand strength.

Finding Her Work Life Balance

Faith is taking the first step, even when you can’t take see the whole staircase.  Salons by JC Valrico’s Alanna Nicole stepped out of her comfort zone and took a leap of faith in furthering her entrepreneurial career with Salons by JC.

Entrepreneur, Leader, and Mentor

Alanna Nicole has been in the hair industry for 15 years and has become a woman of many talents. She shifted gears in her career by joining Salons by JC after working in a 5-star salon for 10 years.  She began as an assistant while she was still in school and quickly worked her way up.

“Before I decided to start my own business, I trained and mentored new stylists.  I became L’OREAL professional expert certified, held in-salon classes, worked runway shows, traveled for weddings, and even lead a team of stylists when the IIFA awards (International Indian Film Academy Awards) came to Tampa.” Alanna shares. “I was living my dream! Doing all these amazing things gave me such fulfillment and truly made me feel like a valuable asset to my salon team!”

As time went on, her vision for her future changed. Her path took another direction when she got married and started her family. “My main purpose at this point was to be a mom and be home with them as much as I could while they were babies.”

Alanna walked away from her prestigious salon career to start her own business at Salons by JC.  She was determined to build a business that afforded her the flexibility to be at home with her kids and continue having the successful career that she had created for herself.  “I wanted to give myself the best of both worlds,” exclaims Alanna.

The Start of a New Era

In taking on a new journey, Alanna had to start from scratch at Salons by JC Valrico.  “Once I got into my salon suite, I still needed to build my clientele around my new schedule.  I went from working minimally to having rent that needed to be paid.”

She saw the way the hair industry was moving and decided to teach herself the art of balayage. In order for her to stay at the top of her game, she needed to specialize in something that was in demand. She furthered her training by taking online classes, practiced on mannequins and models. Her skill and ability to learn and execute quickly increased her clientele.

“After a year I was booking out about a month in advance. I now specialize in balayage, color melting, and dimensional color.  I can truly say that I am more in love with what I do than I’ve ever been before!”

Friends come and go, but a good hair stylist is forever

Alanna aims to make her clients feel comfortable from the moment they walk in her door. Everyone who takes a seat in her salon, she considers to be her friends.

“I take the time before their appointment to casually chat with them and grasp what their goal is for their appointment. I have them send me pictures so we can discuss their options and expectations. I feel this helps to create a level of trust and comfort prior to the appointment. Once we meet, we discuss many things that it makes our time in the salon more efficient. After consultation and finalize the steps for our session, I begin to build our bond…our friendship.”

Choosing Salons by JC as a place to grow her business has been one of the most amazing decisions, she feels she has ever made. “Working alongside all of the amazing business owners is a breath of fresh air. Everyone is always happy and supportive of each other which creates this incredible energy throughout the entire salon,” she says.

Salons by JC has changed her career, family life, and her passion for the industry. It provides Alanna the ability to be a mom, wife, and a salon owner, which was one of her dreams.

“I am living my best life! Watching my kids grow and making an incredible living by doing what I love and doing it my way!”

Thank you for joining the Salons by JC family, Alanna. We wish you the best in your career, family, and all your future endeavors to come!

Salons by JC to Fill Columbia Sportswear Space in Uptown

Photo courtesy of Salons by JC

JC’s lease marks its third metro location for local franchisees.

The Columbia Sportswear space in the Uptown area of south Minneapolis won’t be empty for long. Local franchisees April and Doug Simek are leasing the space as a location for Salons by JC, a growing concept based in San Antonio, Texas.

Salons by JC will open in the 11,268-square-foot space at 3016 Hennepin Avenue South in July. Columbia Sportswear is closing its store there this month. Last week, the apparel retailer emailed a statement to Twin Cities Business saying the Uptown store no longer fits with our strategic direction.” The North Face is also vacating its Uptown location, which is adjacent to Columbia Sportswear.

The Simeks operate two other Salons by JC locations at Country Village in Minnetonka and at Southdale Square in Richfield along the Edina border. Both of those locations opened in late 2016. They had been scouting Uptown real estate but hadn’t previously found a location that seemed to be a good fit.

“We’ve been looking at that Uptown area for over three years,” said April Simek.

A recent Hennepin Avenue overhaul by the city of Minneapolis eliminated street parking on Hennepin between Lake Street and 31st Street, the block where Salons by JC will set up shop. While many Uptown retailers are upset with the elimination of the street parking on the block, Simek said that she’s not concerned.

“I think it’s a plus for us and our use. It makes us more visible with the parking being gone. I actually don’t have an issue with that,” said Simek.

Uptown also has no shortage of salons. But again, Simek isn’t worried because that means that customers consider Uptown as a destination for salons.

“We really want to be in high-density areas with high salon counts…we’re a much different concept,” said Simek.

The Simeks are not the sole franchisees in Minnesota: Salons by JC currently has nine locations throughout the state. There are currently 94 locations in the U.S. and Canada with another 10 locations either under construction or close to starting.

Simek said that she ultimately hopes to have 50 salon suites in the two-story space. But you don’t have to be a hair stylist to rent space. Simek said that spaces are open for anyone in the “health, wellness and beauty” categories. That could include professionals such as massage therapists, acupuncturists and even plastic surgeons.

Terese Reiling-Holden, vice president with Colliers International/Minneapolis-St. Paul represented the Simeks. Commercial real estate retail broker Jeff Herman, president of Minneapolis-based Urban Anthology, represented the property’s landlord in the deal.

“There was interest, and this was one that was just a terrific fit in every way,” said Herman of Salons by JC.

Herman says that the deal signals continued confidence in Uptown, despite recent construction headaches and the departure of other retailers from the area

“This is a transition and as retailers go, other tenants are going to be interested in filling their spaces,” said Herman.

A few doors door from the future home of Salons by JC, Herman is also working to land a tenant for the property where Victoria’s Secret departed a year ago in January 2018.

Herman declined to share specifics but said “We have a letter of intent that we’re working on.”

Beauty, Brains, and Brows: Tamara Samara Salon

Tamara Samara De Paiva, eyebrow specialist and esthetician at Salons by JC Sandy Springs, was voted Best Brows in Atlanta by Atlanta Magazine for 2018 – and received the news as she celebrated her one year anniversary as a salon suite owner.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it, I picked up my plaque and still can’t believe it!” Tamara shares.

A Brazilian-native who immigrated to the United States at six years old, beauty has always been a part of Tamara’s lifestyle. “In our culture, beauty is a big part of a Brazilian woman’s identity, I’m proud that we are constantly challenging the meaning of beauty.”

Even after a small beauty mishap as a child, “I decided to play ‘salon’ and gave my sister a nice bowl cut and shaved one of her eyebrows clean off,”  Tamara knew the beauty world was where she was meant to be. “After my mother’s screams had eased down, I knew this was the career path for me.”

At just 17 years old, Tamara began an apprenticeship with a local esthetician. While working through her apprenticeship, she fell in love with the beauty of aesthetics through her mentor, Suley Smith. “I worked alongside her for six years as she continued to help me perfect my craft. I must have made her head spin with my constant questions!”

What intrigued Tamara most about becoming an eyebrow specialist was the ability to combine two of her passions. “Eyebrows allows me to marry science and art. Every face is different and it requires an artistic vision to be able to bring balance to the face.”

After working in open salons, Tamara knew her creative juices were being limited and desired to grow her evolving brand. “I loved practicing in spaces owned by others, but I had a lot of ideas that I could only put into practice if the space was mine.”

Not long after this realization, Tamara started her own business at Salons by JC in Sandy Springs, GA and wasted no time designing her salon suite to fit her brand. “I was able to make every inch reflect my personal style.”

Starting a salon suite take a lot of start-up work, “When I found myself trying to make that jump to ownership, I admit I didn’t know where to start. But Tamara credits salon owners Trevor and Gerthy Agard with helping her make sure her new salon suite got started on the right foot. “Trevor and Gerthy have really taken the time to make sure all my concerns are met, while still allowing me to run my business how I choose.”

Within one year, Tamara has established a dedicated clientele list, added new services to her salon, and was selected for Atlanta Magazine’s “Best Of” for Best Brows in Atlanta.

Tamara’s social media serves as a great source to showcase her talent and allow her clients to get to know her on a personal leave. “My clients and I refer to social media as ‘the new yellow pages.’ Anything you need is just a hashtag away!”

By sharing snippets of her personal life mixed in with her professional work, Tamara is able to build relationships with her clients and offer personalized services to fit each clients’ needs. “Social media has been a key factor in the success of my business,” she says.

After an enormously successful 2018, what’s next for Tamara Samara Salon? Furthering her Esthetics education by finishing her chemistry degree at Kennesaw State University. “Science has always been a huge passion of mine and I hope to use my degree in the line of work I am in now. Maybe my own product line in the future?!” an excited Tamara shares.

No matter what the future holds for Tamara, she’s proud to be a suite owner at Salons by JC, her “career home.”  “I’ve now practiced for seven years and hopefully many more years to come.”

Spice up your suite with these decor tips

It’s a new year, which means you’re probably itching for a suite makeover.  Or maybe you’re opening your business with Salons by JC for the first time.  Either way, we’ve got some great tips on how to keep costs down but still have your suite lookin’ swanky!

Here are our top 5 suite decor tips:

Decide on a theme

In order to make a strong statement about you and your brand, decide on a theme.  Are you a glam girl, shabby chic, mid-century modern, vintage, minimalist, boho, industrial, zen, rustic?  If you’re not sure, find or create a piece of art that you love and design around that.

Measure and make a plan

Having a functional space to run your business in is very important, so measuring and planning is key.  Don’t forget to utilize your walls for shelving and extra cabinetry to ensure you maintain enough floor space to move around freely in your suite.

Furniture updates

There are lots of ways to save money when it comes to furniture.  You would be surprised at what you can find on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or garage and estate sales.  Even if it’s not exactly what you’re looking for, things can always be painted or reupholstered to fit your décor vibe.  That being said, you can keep your current furniture and simply paint or reupholster it for a new look without spending money on a whole new piece!  And don’t forget places like Home Goods, Marshall’s and Ross to find name brand pieces for a fraction of the cost.

Décor updates

Pretty much everything mentioned in “Furniture updates” applies here.  From painting to second-hand sales to discount stores, the sky is the limit.  Not to mention you can make your own!  There are so many great ideas on Pinterest and easy “how to” videos on YouTube.  Oh, and don’t forget throw pillows.  Switching those out can also be a game-changer.

Paint and faux wallpaper

Last but certainly not least, change up those walls.  Pick a new paint color for your whole suite, or just pick one wall as an accent wall to add a new color to.  Another fun idea with a ton of options is faux wallpaper.  You can find this just about anywhere now including Amazon for a very minimal cost.  Pro Tip – get someone to help you install the faux wallpaper to ensure a professional look.  The best part is it’s super easy to remove, so you can change up the vibe anytime!

Scher Excellence in Florida

With a new year comes new and exciting beginnings. In January 2019, husband and wife power duo, Cyndi and Peter Scher, will be opening their third Salons by JC location in Miami, Florida. Nestled in the heart of Miami-Dade County, Salons by JC- Kendale Lakes is on the fast track to bringing suite owners the freedom and flexibility to express their vision in the area’s most luxurious salon environment.

Cyndi and Peter Scher

A Knack for Entrepreneurship

For some, the spirit and talent of entrepreneurship runs deep. This fits the bill when it comes to Cyndi and Peter Scher. They have been navigating their entrepreneurial path since 2001. They launched their joint business efforts with chain franchising, by opening a Cold Stone Creamery in Gainesville, FL. They later added a second store, then sold them off in 2007.

“We then opened Five Guys Burgers, and ended up owning 6 locations then we sold them all off,” Cyndi explains. “This gave us the opportunity to buy into our first Salons By JC in 2013. We loved the concept and business model so much we opened our first location in 2015 and a second in 2017. This is our first foray into the beauty industry. We have learned so much on the business and beauty side.”

Peter and Cyndi day one of construction at their newest location, Kendale Lakes

In the summer of 2018, Cyndi and Peter’s newest location, Salons by JC- Kendale Lakes, reached capacity before ever opening its doors. The location now employs a vast waiting list of excited suite owners anxiously awaiting to be a part of this new location. This is a grand feat and one that is due entirely to Cyndi and Peter’s dedication to Salons by JC and their faith in the beauty community.

Peter getting his newest location, Kendale Lakes, ready

“There is a huge demand for salon suites in South Florida,” Peter shares. “Miami is a melting pot of culture and we have found that there is a huge desire to be an entrepreneur. There is a talent for hair, nails, brows, lashes, and skincare in general within this community.”

New Location, New Design

Cyndi and Peter’s third location will provide beauty professionals suites that are private, luxurious, and fully customizable.

“We are insulating the walls for noise,” says Peter. “We have quite a few skincare, massage, brows and lash businesses that don’t want to hear their neighbor through the walls. We will be doing this for all future locations as we see diversity in services provided.”

Cyndi also sees the value and importance of building good relationships. “We have a much more personal relationship with our suite owners than we did during our first year and a half. We can see that they appreciate that.  I do a lot of marketing for our locations and also for our suite owners. This assists my Concierges to help walk-in clients find just the right person to provide a service and hopefully this will lead to a future appointment. It’s a win-win!”

Cyndi with her fellow suite owners from the Hollywood, FL location

Accomplish More Together

Cyndi and Peter take on three locations by splitting up their roles.  “I handle the marketing and have the “personal interaction” with our tenants,” Cyndi explains. “Peter does all the behind the scenes work – bookkeeping, working with contractors, handyman, plumbing, A/C, roof issues, etc. We spend one day a week at each location (sometimes more). If our suite owners need anything they can meet with us or talk to us briefly on that day. Between myself, Peter and our concierge, we feel we have a good presence in our salon.”

With four other competitors in Kendale Lakes, Cyndi and Peter have proven time and time again that their location is the best in town. Salons by JC-Kendale Lakes is located on the busiest street in Kendale, and in a very well known shopping center.

“The traffic count for this location is very high and we have plenty of parking that is well lit at night which is very important for all that work late in the evening hours. Come January 2019 we plan to open full and stay full by constantly adding value to our current tenants.”

Congratulations Cyndi and Peter on all your current and future success as entrepreneurs and Salons by JC owners franchisees.  We look forward to your official opening in late January.
