Master of Disguise: M. Cole Methods

Life isn’t always perfect, but your makeup can be! Salons by JC Spartanburg’s Maci Shepard shares her passion for creativity as the owner of her own salon suite business, M. Cole Methods.

What makes Maci a star in her industry is her ability to pull off a diverse variety of beauty services. From soft glam to works of art using special effects makeup, Maci does an astounding job of creating various looks for all her clients.

Maci Shephard – Owner of M. Cole Methods at Salons by JC Spartanburg

26-year-old Maci Shepard grew up surrounded in the world of hair, where her mom was a hairstylist for 10+ years. For as long as she can remember, she has had a front-row seat to a continuous art gallery of hair. Before attending the Regency Beauty Institute, her mother was her biggest motivator and inspired her to launch the career she loves so much today.

Enhancing the Beauty Within

Makeup is the accessory for your face – enhancing the natural beauty underneath like a jacket complements an outfit. Up until about a year ago, Maci’s focus was mainly on glam makeup. It all changed with one hairdo.

Maci Shares Many Unique Looks Throughout the Halloween Season

“The first artistic or character makeup I did was at Regency, where I did a purple sugar skull to match the purple hair that I was rocking at the time. After that, I got into watching Special Effects Makeup YouTube tutorials. I created a mermaid on Facebook live last year and that turned into an entire week of Facebook live videos devoted to turning myself into all sorts of creatures!” Maci shares.

“For me, the artistic aspect of changing how your features look just by creating a shadow here or a highlight there is mesmerizing,” Maci states on her passion for makeup. “I could spend hours just seeing what works and what doesn’t and figuring out what I can use to make my makeup look more life-like!”

With Halloween right around the corner, the demand for spooky and haunting makeup looks is high. As a knowledgeable makeup and Special Effects Makeup Artist, Maci receives plenty of requests for Halloween looks – and inspiration is everywhere.

A Sample Of One of Maci’s In Demand Halloween Looks

“There is so much inspiration for different looks everywhere! Fall colors make me so happy! I’m excited to see this year’s turn out for my Trick-Or-Treatments!”

Maci’s Trick-Or-Treatments are a large reason why her makeup and hair clientele remain loyal. She provides these to her clients to help them maintain their healthy hair in between appointments. Mixed in with her scalp massages tha she provides to all clients, Maci receives many referrals, as well. “They always say they tell everyone about my ‘magic hands!’, she shares.

Use What You Have. Do What You Can

Before starting at Salons by JC Spartanburg, Maci worked at a local car dealership for two years after attending the Regency Institute in order to provide a living for herself. A short time later, she realized she knew that she wanted to pursue her passion for hair and makeup.

By July 2018, Maci took a leap of faith and started her salon suite at Salons by JC Spartanburg.

Maci Displaying Her Special Effects Makeup Skills

“Coming in, I was really starting from scratch honestly. Everyone greeted me when I came in, they were so warm, welcoming, and beyond encouraging! It was definitely a moment for me when I got to step back and just breathe and know that this was the place I was meant to be at,” she shares on her first experience with Salons by JC.

Since then, Maci has worked hard to make her clients feel beautiful and at home every time they walk into her suite. She’s named her suite “The Cottage” because, with a faux fireplace, candles, blankets, and pillows, M. Cole Methods is sure to give you the most relaxing experience.

“The Cottage” Salon Suite Is a Home Away from Home

“I love seeing people’s shoulders relax and their faces light up when they step into my room. I want my guests to feel like they can breathe in the same way that I did when I walked into Salons by JC and said to myself, ‘this is where I’m supposed to be.’”

Believe You Can, and You Will

As far as future and personal goals for Maci, she will continue to strive to be an awesome stylist.

“God has given me a phenomenal gift and I’m just thankful for all the blessings that keep coming my way in this leap of faith I took!” she shares. “Leaving a full-time job that I was extremely secure in to follow a dream of making beautiful (and creepy) art on a regular basis and being my own boss and making my own schedule is scary, but it’s a great scary.”

A Truly Unique Look From M. Cole Methods

Maci plans on continuing to provide not only the best looks for her clients but the best atmosphere inside her salon suite. “Beauty to me has always been a safe space and where I go to settle down and pamper myself and that’s how I want all of my guests to feel.”

You rock Maci! Salons by JC Spartanburg is grateful to have you as apart of our family! We wish you the best of luck in this exciting chapter of your life.

Conquering Your Passions, One Lash at a Time

The beauty industry is a culmination of two things: being classy and feeling fabulous. At Salons by JC Hollywood, you’ll find both class and fabulosity at Jade Wiltshire’s Fabulash Beauty and Wax Spa.

A Woman of Many Trades

Before Jade began her entrepreneurial journey in the beauty industry, she was on top of her game in other endeavors. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, she was a police dispatcher for the Miami-Dade Police Department for almost 10 years. She has also owned two liquor stores and even opened a preschool. After selling her second liquor store in 2015, Jade was introduced into the world of lashes.

Jade, owner of Fabulash Beauty and Wax Spa

“I had no idea lash extensions were so big! While I was learning how to perfect my craft, I had to become a licensed Esthetician. I had a few girls that were clients that asked me to train them on how to apply the extensions, which led me to start my own training classes, which is truly a passion for me!” Jade shares. “I love seeing my students works after they have taken my class. It always makes me proud when they actually get it and start their own careers.”

Jade Has Taught Many Estheticians on Lash Extensions

In addition to the Fabulash Beauty and Wax Spa’s five-star full lash services, Jade has also added Full Body European Waxing to her business as well!

“Waxing is something I absolutely love doing. I can do waxing’s all day!” she says.

A Future as Bright as Hollywood

Having her own suite at Salons by JC Hollywood for the last two years has been a luxurious experience for Jade and her clients.

Jade Working on a Client Inside her Salon Suite

“I’ve felt at home at Salons by JC from day one,” Jade gushes. “Peter, Cyndi, and April are the absolute best! Every single one of my needs has been accommodated here and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! I greatly appreciate that here, my clients can feel safe. It’s just the perfect place for my business!”

Jade, being the diverse and ambitious woman that she is, has a few future goals in mind for her career in the beauty industry that include making her own custom wigs, as well as continuing her passion for educating others that are looking to learn how to apply lashes.

Jade’s Fabulash Logo

“I have been doing a lot of research on finding a hair vendor with top-notch, quality hair that can be custom colored without damaging the hair,” says Jade. “This project is something that is definitely in the works for me. I would also love to travel to the islands to teach and train lash extensions there as well.”

Passion is Key

Passion is the energy that keeps us going. It keeps us filled with meaning, happiness, excitement, and anticipation, especially when it comes to the beauty of other people. This passion motivates Jade to provide her clients with the utmost confidence by the time they walk out of her door.

High-End Lash Extensions on a Happy Client

“The most rewarding part of what I do is transitioning my clients from the time they lay down to waking up looking absolutely stunning. Lash extensions are such a beauty enhancement and very addicting. My clients walk out happy and feeling gorgeous and that makes me smile!”

Great work Jade! Salons by JC wishes you continued success in all your current and future endeavors.

Helping Salons by JC Find Easy, Affordable Health Insurance

Let’s face it: health insurance can be really confusing and stressful. What’s a deductible? How are copayments and coinsurances different? What are subsidies? What’s the difference between an HMO and PPO? How much coverage do I need and how do I find insurance that fits my budget??

Not only do you need the answers to those questions, but you need them now so that you can make the right decisions during the upcoming “Open Enrollment Period” (or OEP for short), the one time of year when you can purchase or change your health insurance. This year OEP starts November 1st, 2018 (or October 15 if you live in California) and ends December 15. That means you only have 6 weeks to enroll in the health insurance plan that you’re going to depend for all of 2019!

That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Stride, a company that helps you save time and money on insurance and taxes. They make it really easy to find the right coverage for you at the lowest possible prices and help you get enrolled in 10 minutes or less.

Here’s what you’ll get from our partnership with Stride:

  • A personalized recommendation for health insurance based on your preferred doctors, prescription drugs, and medical conditions
  • Access to more plans than the government exchanges (at the same price)
  • An easy way to estimate your income so you can save as much money as possible on your insurance payments
  • Tips on how to lower your health insurance bill with guidance from Stride’s blog and their award-winning Member Experience team
  • Support and answers to questions you might have during enrollment

The good news: all of this will only take about 10 minutes. You’ll answer a few questions on our safe & secure Salons by JC & Stride site, get a personalized recommendation, and get enrolled. Along the way, Stride will let you know if you qualify for any subsidies (financial assistance from the government that you don’t need to pay back) to make sure your payments are as low as possible. On average, Stride members save $387 per month on health insurance through Stride. Oh, and you’ll have access to year-round, free phone, chat or email support.

Why are we doing this? Simple: we’re really glad to have you as part of the Salons by JC community, and we want to be sure you and your loved ones have the coverage they need. We partnered with Stride to make that as easy for you as possible.

Here’s to staying happy and healthy in 2019!

Beauty, Brains and Blondes

Being a hairstylist is not just a job, it’s a craft. House of Blondes owner Christina Payton has paved a way for success for herself as an entrepreneur and master color specialist.

Meet Christina

A Chicago native, Christina knew from the young age of just 5 years old that she wanted to be a beauty industry professional. Growing up, she spent much of her time brushing and cutting her mother’s Barbie doll’s hair. It was a sign to her family and those around her of the big things to come.

Fast forward to her career as a hair stylist and 14 years into the industry, she took a leap of faith and moved to Naples, Florida.

Christina Payton – Owner of The House of Blondes

“I told myself that if I was going to leave my clients of 10 years, I needed to be put by a palm tree.” Christina says. “I opened my single salon suite three months after I moved here with no clientele. Three years later, I now have 3 salon suites and 10 chairs, and most importantly, my dream team!”

The House of Blondes is born

Going from no clientele to becoming one of the most successful suite owners at Salons by JC Naples has been a huge accomplishment for Christina.

Christina opened The House of Blondes in January 2018 with a double suite, two stylists, and two assistants all trained under her expertise. “Three weeks after our opening, I made the very scary decision to expand once again,” She shares. “I knew I was only as good as my team and if I were to expand, I didn’t want it to be about me anymore.”

The House of Blondes Open Salon Suites

Before establishing The House of Blondes name, Christina struggled with deciding what to name her new salon business. “After a day of doing nothing but beautiful blonde hair, I couldn’t decide which picture I wanted to post because they were all so pretty and I said to myself, ‘Sometimes I just want to do blonde hair all day! I just want a House of Blondes!’ I knew immediately that was the name we were going to use moving forward.”

The House of Blondes Team

Now that she’s established her own group of suites and has built a successful business, Christina has also begun educating other hairstylists on how to perfect the art of making their clients beautifully blonde through the Redken Artist program.

“I teach people from all over on how to perfect blonding,” Christina shares. “In the world of hair coloring and treatment, going blonde is the most skill intensive and the most frequent client request. I believe if you can do a good blonde you can do anything when it comes to hair color!”

With such a niche specialty, yet highly requested service, Christina decided to make her salon THE place to go for all things blonding.

The House of Blondes Has Many Satisfied Clients

“Our motto is ‘There’s a blonde for everyone!’”

Don’t be afraid to try

Christina reminds us to never let fear get in the way of your success. She started from the ground up as an entrepreneur and has had no regrets ever since.

“When I started my business, I had no clientele, I didn’t know anyone. I had $1000 to buy all of my color and equipment. Even my family thought I was crazy!” Christina says. “I knew in my heart as long as I gave it my all, I couldn’t be scared of whether I fail or succeed. It is making the choice to try. I still feel this way today.”

House of Blondes Logo

Social media has also been a huge platform for Christina to build her clientele list. With over 2,000 followers on Facebook, she is constantly posting pictures, videos, tips and tricks for the world to see.

“I also ask for our guests to please take time to leave us a review, which is what most people look for when searching for the right stylist. They have been a HUGE part of the success we have had by sharing that with others.”

Teamwork makes the dream work

Working with Salons by JC Naples has been an incredible partnership for Christina. “I can’t speak highly enough of the owner, Lisa Bayard and our concierge, Beatrice. They have been with me since day one and took a risk in renting to me without having clients. They are always so accommodating and go above and beyond. I have nothing but gratitude for them!”

Salons by JC Naples provides the ideal set-up for The House of Blondes. “I absolutely love the environment here as well. Everyone is here to help everyone out. It is not like your typical salon. We may be separate businesses but I can assure you, we always help each other whether its a formula, a shampoo, or loaning a color someone may not have.”

Christina hopes to continue to grow her team so that The House of Blondes is everywhere! She has her eye on the prize, as she’s already mapped out other locations to expand her business, while still keeping Salons by JC Naples the original location.

A Member of The House of Blondes Works on a Client

“I wouldn’t be who I am without my passion for this industry. There is no greater feeling than making someone feel instantly better about themselves. Hair is so important. It is the crown you never take off. We have the ability to transform someone just within a few hours, and the relationships we create with our guests are irreplaceable.”

“Saying it’s a passion is an understatement, I dream in color, and I make hair contact before I make eye contact. As I always say, ‘We don’t make people beautiful, we just get to enhance the beauty that they already have.’”

Congratulations on all of your accomplishments and hard work, Christina! You are amazing at what you do. You make Salons by JC so proud!

From Radiant Skin to Glowing from Within

In a busy city like New York, great skin doesn’t happen by chance. However, there are some professionals that can make great skin happen by appointment. Meet Salons by JC Manhattan’s very own Professional Face Therapist, Angela Colgan.

Angela Colgan, Owner of The Skin Studio NY

New York State of Mind

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Angela moved to the Big Apple to pursue a career in musical theater. Three years later, she decided to follow her passion and go to beauty school.  That move led her to having her dream career and dream family.

“I am so happy I made my move and my career transition,” Angela shares. “While living in Manhattan, I met my wonderful husband, Henry and we got married in 2014. We welcomed our beautiful daughter Annie into this world in June 2015.”

Angela’s journey as the owner of her own business, The Skin Studio NY, has been nothing short of amazing and filled with success along the way.

The Skin Studio NY is Located Inside Salons by JC Manhattan

“I had been working at a facial clinic for about seven years before I made the move to Salons by JC and opened The Skin Studio NY. I had a vision for the treatment room and wanted my clients to feel relaxed and take a break from this bustling city.”

Angela has been able to achieve this through her unique vision of a relaxing oasis in the middle of Chelsea.

“At The Skin Studio NY, my clients can leave their problems at the door, come inside, receive an excellent facial and leave them feeling better than they did when they arrived. When you feel good, you look good! I give every client 110%!”

Inside of The Skin Studio NY

The desire for great skin is an ageless one

The Skin Studio NY provides services unlike any other traditional facial you’ve received before.  Angela specializes in The Face Place Treatment, a treatment she says provides guaranteed serious results, rather than just the usual pampering. This “no frills” facial focuses on very thorough extractions combined with an antioxidant-packed mask that is penetrated with Galvanic current. The results? Clearer skin, more even skin tones, smaller pores, diminished fine lines, firmer skin, and an overall glowing complexion.

Face Place is A Unique Specialty in Skincare

According to Angela, the Face Place Treatment, along with the other skin services she provides at the Skin Studio NY are perfect for everyone—and it shows in her loyal and diverse clientele.

Angela Strives to Provide A Luxurious Space for Clients

Beauty is being comfortable and confident

Angela has been with Salons by JC since February 2017 and loves each and every minute of it.  “I am so happy here!” Angela says. “Not only is the building beautiful and well kept, but I love our concierge, Alexandra, who greets my clients at the door and lets them know where to go. They treat us with so much respect and let us run our business how we see fit.”

Angela says she loves that Salons by JC allows her to have a successful business, where she can bring out the best in her clients and make them feel confident in their own skin.

“I love to teach my clients how to be an even better version of themselves. Seeing a client with glowing, beautiful skin is an amazing feeling! I love my job and I love making people feel and look beautiful.”

The Skin Studio NY’s Unique Decor

As for future endeavors, Angela hopes to eventually add more services to her menu and make it an even better experience for her clients.

“I will continue my esthetics education to be the best I can be!”

We’re so happy to have you with us at Salons by JC Manhattan, Angela! We wish you continued success with your business.

Organically Suite: Maintaining Healthy Presence on Facebook

Creating consistent and relevant organic posts is vital to the success of any business, especially for Salons by JC locations and salon suite owners. Here are a few tips and recommendations for creating great organic content on your Facebook pages.

It’s All Organic

Maintaining digital presence is necessary to create and nurture lines of communication between brands and their consumers. Customers interact with social media platforms to ensure brand credibility.

For Salons by JC locations, potential salon suite owners will likely visit your Facebook page in order to see what kind of community they will be joining. If the location has a positive, consistent, and brand-relevant social presence, they will be more likely to want to learn more about your location. The same goes for salon suite owners – future clientele will look do their research prior to booking a service with you.

Ensure the photos that you use are clear and have an engaging caption, much like this post by Perk Beauty Bar, located at Salons by JC Southdale Square:

Perk Beauty Bar showcases her talents with an engaging caption

Consistency Matters

Being inconsistent can hurt you in the long run when it comes to organic posting on social media. Two things can come from this:

  1.  It causes a consumer to wonder if the business is currently operating
  2.  It can cause an immediate lack of trust in a brand

When a business doesn’t invest time in managing their social presence, they can appear unorganized and inauthentic to potential customers.  We recommend that you post anywhere from 3- 5 times per week. The posts should clearly show potential salon suite owners what makes Salons by JC the ONLY choice for salon professionals and what sets our brand apart.

Here are some great examples of posts that are engaging and captivating to the audience.

Show off the work of the salon suite owners.  Not only does this benefit your salon suite owners, but it’s also an easy way to create content for the page.

Avoid Sounding Like Spam

While social media is a powerful tool for recruiting potential salon suite owners, too many posts with “call for a tour” or “be your own boss” verbiage will be marked as spam by Facebook and will not deliver to the people who have liked your location’s page. For those that do see the posts, they may decide to unfollow the page.

Here’s a great example of a salon suite availability post that is engaging and fun.

Salons by JC Southdale, MN displays both a salon suite owner and salon suite availability

If you have any questions or would like to learn how you can enhance your social media experience for yourself and your audience, the in-house marketing team is eager to assist.

One of Charlotte’s Finest: Gail Phaup

When you love the people you work with, your colleagues become family.  Concierge, Gail Phaup, takes pride in the close-knit atmosphere she gets to be around every day at Salons by JC- Carmel Park.

Gail Phaup – Concierge at Salons by JC Carmel Park

Meet Gail

Before working for Salons by JC, Gail worked as an assistant general manager of a large day spa in Charlotte for 26 years.  In this position she trained staff, handled customer service issues, and made sure goals were always attained. This experience was perfect for her career transition in 2015. “The day spa where I worked was sold, and then closed in December 2013,” Gail shares. “I took some time off to relax and figure out my next move. After a lot of thought and prayer, I was led to Salons by JC.”

Gail went to the site of the under-construction Salons by JC Carmel Park and called the number left on the window for information about the new location.  After speaking to the owner, Luis Moreno, she found out he wasn’t ready to hire anyone.  Gail remained positive and insistent, “I told Luis about my background and how I would love the opportunity to work with him.  I sent him my resume and a few days later I had an interview. I was hired that day and my journey began.”

Happiness is Having Great Coworkers

Her experience working at Salons by JC Carmel Park has been nothing short of wonderful. “Luis and I share a lot of the same values and have a great sense of urgency when it comes to taking care of our salon suite owners and guests,” Gail says.

What Gail loves most about working at her location is the positive environment.  Everyone is upbeat, especially the salon suite owners and their clientele.

“I have established a great rapport with our elderly clientele and they appreciate the special attention they receive. We are a salon family and go the extra mile to help each other in times of happiness or sadness.”

Celebrating Holidays With Salon Suite Owners

When one of their own needed assistance after being diagnosed with breast cancer, they came together as one.  “We started a fundraiser to assist her with medical expenses,” Gail shares.  Through the generosity of fellow salon suite owners and beauty supply representatives who donated supplies, they were able to raise $4,500 for the family.

Salons by JC Carmel Park has given back to the community by donating to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, American Heart Association, and Blessings in the Storm.  They have also donated their time to work on houses for Habitat for Humanity. “We truly have a caring community of salon suite owners.”

A life lived for others is a life worthwhile

Gail enjoys motivating salon suite owners to aim higher and fulfill their dreams through positive encouragement. “I love helping salon suite owners set and attain daily, weekly, monthly goals.”

“Whether it is assisting my salon suite owners with a special need or enjoying one of our events, they depend on me to be there for them. It is my privilege and purpose to help them be successful”, Gail shares.

She emphasizes that her main priority as a concierge is to make everyone who steps into Salons by JC  welcome. Her time is completely devoted to her salon suite owners and their clients to make sure everyone’s experience is exceptional.  “When a person walks in, I greet them and make sure they get to their designated suite.  Our salon culture is one of nurturing and caring, and our reward is a happy client, which is our sole purpose,” Gail says.

Thank you for all that you do here at Salons by JC Carmel Park Gail! We appreciate your devotion and dedication in the role of concierge.  Your demeanor is what sets us apart from the rest and makes us the #1 ranked salon suite in the industry.

Father Daughter Franchise

Coming together is the beginning, staying together is progress, working together is success. Father-daughter duo Reid Nuttall and Adrianne Griesmyer have officially begun their journey as new franchisees at our latest location in Columbus, Ohio.

Exterior of Salons by JC Polaris

Before becoming salon owners, Reid and Adrianne both had completely different careers. “My experience is in the corporate world, where I have been working with technology,” Reid shares. “In the past, I received a national award for protecting the environment through preventing building a large fossil fuel electricity generating plant. We did this through using technology to change consumption patterns.”

Adrianne started her career lobbying at a certification firm in DC, where she managed auditors around the world that conducted quality audits throughout manufacturing plants to ensure the safety of the product being used.

It was the influence of her father that got Adrianne involved with Salons by JC. The concept of giving vibrant, working professionals the chance to pursue their dreams of operating successful businesses is what drew them both to launching a business of their own. Salons by JC provided the perfect business model they were looking to share and thus began their father-daughter endeavor of spreading entrepreneurship.

Behind every great daughter is an amazing father

Reid followed and supported Adrianne and her husband during their move to Columbus, Ohio in 2017.  “I quit my job and followed my husband as he started working for a company in Ohio as an electrical engineer,” Adrianne says. “I knew I still wanted to work, but at the time, we were also expecting our first child. Opening a salon felt like the perfect opportunity to balance having work responsibilities while also being present for my child.”

Reid lovingly describes his community at Salons by JC as “energetic, vibrant, and capable. I see us as being so much more than a corporate entity providing rooms for beauty professionals to rent. With my daughter and son-in-law, we can create an environment that will allow our suite-owners to prosper, grow their business, and work in a great environment!”

Working so closely together has presented its challenges, but brings a newer and more collaborative aspect into their relationship as business owners. With Reid, Adrianne, and her husband Ken combined, they are able to bounce ideas off of each other and take pride in the fact that they make sure no details are missed. “Ken and Adrianne’s energy and eye for perfection has caused a lot of extra work and difficulty, yet is a major factor in why our suites look and function so well,” Reid says.
