When A Chair Just Doesn’t Say “You,” Only a Salon Suite Will Do
One problem with chair rental is that the better you get at running your own business, the more branded you are—and the less likely it is that a salon chair rental expresses your brand.
For Brittany Perkins, an Aveda school graduate who chose chair rental after four years in the business, it became clear that the salon just didn’t represent who she was. Her freedom to express herself was limited.
She knew friends who were in a Salons by JC suite and decided to check it out. She quickly decided that Salons by JC had a great location and was much more modern looking. “I also liked the fact that it had a concierge,” she says. “Clients really don’t understand the concept that you’re independent, especially if you were in a chair-rental situation”.
When Brittany opened Perk Beauty Bar in Salons by JC’s Southdale Square, Edina, MN location, she immediately began creating a personalized space that “inspires people to be more conscious of their impact on the environment.” Her environmentally friendly salon suite is a partner with Green Circle Salons, an organization that helps salons reduce their carbon footprint through recycling.
“I save my foils and ship them to Green Circle once a month so they get recycled,” says Brittany. “I also send them my hair sweepings, which are used to help soak up oil spills. They even take my excess hair color, separate the water out and return it to our water system to be cleaned and filtered. The color is then stored to keep it out of landfills.”
Brittany also recycles her own paper and plastic and only carries environmentally sound brands like Davines, which uses carbon-neutral packaging and relies on manufacturing that’s completely fueled by renewable energy. To further highlight her brand, she created a decor that uses second-hand furnishings and re-purposes a few fun things from home, like her gold-sequined pillow. The artistic work she does also reflects her attitude that hair health comes first. She describes her personal style as “beautiful but low-maintenance.” In other words, cuts and color that look great at home for an extended period of time and don’t involve over-exposure to chemicals.
“Most of my clients are in their late twenties, so they don’t need gray coverage,” she explains. “With Ombré and balayage color, they can go 3 to 6 months without a retouch, which opens up appointments for new clients.” To make sure they look great, she also works styling lessons into individual appointments. “One of the biggest complaints clients have is that they can’t re-create their salon look at home,” notes Brittany. “I used to give group styling lessons; now, I offer them individually and post live tutorials online, on my Facebook business page.”
With a suite that’s all about her brand, Brittany now attracts the clients she wants, something she learned how to do from business classes she’s been taking. “I even learned to create my own website and discovered why adding testimonials and online booking was key,” says Brittany. “I run my salon suite like a fully functioning salon and brand.”
She still enjoys the artistic aspects more than the business functions but with her private eco-smart suite, she can spend all the quality time connecting with her clients that she wants.
