A Week at the Salons by JC Corporate Office

“Passionate about you.” These words are on the window in front of the cubicle where I worked last week at the Salons by JC corporate office. And it’s true: whether you are a beauty specialist looking to lease a room, a concierge looking for social media help, or a customer looking for a new hairstylist, these people are passionate about serving you.

Last week, I shadowed Marketing Account Specialist Analissa Severn and Franchise Marketing Coordinator Marlene Romo Flores. All day, these two women lead social media training sessions over the phone, write blog posts featuring exceptional suite owners, check-up on each salon’s concierge, create captivating graphics and content, and manage the Salons by JC website.

When I asked Marlene what her favorite part of the job is, she told me, “I love working with small businesses. These franchises are individually owned, and it’s exciting for me to walk through the process with each of our salon locations and see them grow individually and find success.”

Analissa shares that same kind of excitement. She especially loves when she’s able to attend events hosted by Salons by JC like the Empowering You workshops and the annual owners’ conference: “That’s where I finally get to meet a lot of our fabulous franchisees that I talk with over the phone.” For her, the people are what make her job worth it.

This summer, the Salons by JC website is getting a makeover. Typical of the company, the motive behind this revamp is a desire to better serve its concierges, clients, and suite owners. Salons by JC president Steve Griffey says, “We want to make it more accessible, more informative, and more hospitable for everyone.” They are rolling out the new website in the next several weeks, and everyone around the office is excited about it.

During my week at the office, I got to conduct a social media audit, rewrite some website content, visit with some of the suite owners at Salons by JC Legacy, take over the Salons by JC Instagram for a day, and learn from the people at the corporate office, who executive assistant Crystal Vorheier calls “the people behind the curtain.” It was a week full of learning about the small things that make the big picture vision of Salons by JC possible.

More than just proficient at their jobs, these people are passionate, and this passion is the impulse behind everything that Salons by JC does–every over-the-phone social media training, every non-profit partnership, every entrepreneur workshop, and every office meeting. They are in the business of empowering and supporting entrepreneurs, and their passion for it–for empowering and supporting each of you–has become the framework for the franchise’s success.

Delaney Young is an English Major at Wheaton College.  She joined the Salons by JC corporate team for one week and worked alongside the marketing team in creating new content that will be used on Craigslist and on the website.  Delaney will be attending a writing camp this summer to enhance her songwriting skills.  It was a pleasure to have this young lady join our team and we wish her the best of luck as she finishes her studies.

Turning Walk-Ins Into Clients – Sharon’s Spot

Most salon suite owners already have a dedicated clientele list when they join Salons by JC. Sharon Clark, owner of Sharon’s Spot, was an exception. She joined Salons by JC Denton over four years ago, ready to start building her business from the ground up. “I moved to Denton from Wichita Falls, opening my salon with no clientele,” Sharon says.

“At the time, all she did were men’s cuts from a military base in Witchita Falls,” Salon Owner Brenda Reynolds adds. “She instantly signed a 5-year lease.”

Fast forward a few years later, Sharon has upgraded twice to larger salon suites and is now looking to expand her salon with a dedicated assistant.

From the Ground Up

Sharon took an incredible leap of faith when joining Salons by JC, but quickly knew the salon would be a great fit for her. “I chose Salons by JC because of the location. And they advertised and encourage walk-ins,” she states.

Knowing the salon was managed full-time, she set her business hours the same as the salon to make the most out of every walk-in.

“Sharon started off in one of our smallest salon suites. She set her own goals, was present every day, and works very hard to build her business,” Salon Owner Brenda says, expressing her admiration for Sharon’s work ethic.

“When a client comes in, she makes sure people know that she’s in business for herself. She hands out her business cards and takes really good care of her clients,” Brenda adds.

Decades of Experience

Sharon practically grew up in a salon, watching her mom and other hairstylists work their magic. “It was my playground,” she says. Now, with over 37 years of experience in the beauty industry, Sharon is thrilled to be her own salon owner. Setting her own schedule has allowed her to attend a variety of beauty classes, where she has learned about new coloring techniques, Brazilian blowouts, and much more.  These classes help her stay up to date on the latest trends.

Even with her lengthy clientele list, she still accepts new clients, saying “I can always make room on my books for new clients be it via walk-ins, social media, or referrals.”

Her permanent clients also love the service they get at Salons by JC, which is one of the primary reasons Sharon continues to expand at the salon.

“I love that there’s always someone to show clients to my room, towel service is amazing, the salon is always clean, and Steve and Brenda treat us like family!” Sharon gushes.

We love hearing these success stories from our salon suite owners. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Sharon!

Community Involvement Concierge Superstars

Houston Willowbrook Celebrates Small Business Week

When Arlease Graves interviewed for the Concierge position at Salons by JC Houston North in Champions Willowbrook, her first impression of the salon suite was awe-inspiring. “Finding out that under one roof was a community of business owners was very exciting to me”.

After speaking to owners, Jeff and Mary, about the position and touring the facility, Arlease was convinced this would be a good fit. “Jeff and Mary told me to treat the salon like it was my own business and that mindset has been motivating me in my approach with potential new suite owners.” That outlook has also helped her in building rapport with her current suite owners, “I keep an open line of communication for any needs that may arise and I also make sure to work with them on their business plans and goals”.

Jeff and Mary Panjawani with Arlease Graves

The Power of Community

Arlease recently took the initiative to host a community small business week event at the salon that brought forth 5 salon tours that week that lead to 3 heavily interested lease leads.  “What made this event awesome was the participation of everyone at the salon”.  The tours were just an added bonus to an already successful event.  We asked Arlease what are some of her tips to staying on top of leads who have toured, but didn’t sign a lease.  “Leases take time, but don’t let them forget you.  I always follow up with an email if they don’t answer the phone when I call them.  I remind them that we would love to have them at Salons by JC and we will work with them to help them grow their business”.   Finding the perfect suite is also something that Arlease stresses during the time of the tour.  “Make sure that the suite fits their clientele and let them know that they can always go bigger as their clientele increases, but assure them that we are here with them every step of the way”.

Building the Small Business Community

The Small Business Week event planning started with a trip to the USPS Willow Place location so Arlease could learn more about what they could offer her suite owners. “We had 5,000 direct mail pieces that we had previously printed and I asked the station manager how we could best deliver them to neighboring residents and businesses”. This short discussion resulted in 2,400 mailers being mailed out at no cost to the Houston North location.

Seeing the success of interacting with her neighboring businesses, Arlease decided to organize a small business week event at their location that would be beneficial for her suite owners.  She contacted the USPS and Combined Life and Health Insurance and asked if they would be interested in having a table at their location to give information to their suite owners.  She didn’t stop there.  She reached out to Louisiana Finest Boilers who served up some delicious Crawfish for the event.

“The suite owners were very excited to be involved with National Small Business Week”. The location had t-shirts made with the Salons by JC logo in the front and each suite owner was offered the opportunity to have their logo on the back of the shirt.

An Empowering Environment

In just one year at Salons by JC Houston Champions Willowbrook, Arlease has transcended the environment and instilled a sense of community among the suite owners. It’s easy to sense her passion for her suite owners and for Salons by JC.  She looks forward to partnering with many more local businesses and organizations that can enhance business growth for her suite owners and bring great networking connections to the salon.  She looks forward to hosting and collaborating more events in the future for the Houston North location.

The key distinction at Salons by JC is our dedicated Concierge.  Arlease is the definition of the dedicated, hard-working, innovative Concierge who goes above and beyond to make sure the community is aware of the location and all the services offered.  She also focuses on the suite owners to make sure their needs are met to make sure they thrive in the salon environment.   Congratulations to the Houston North location and Arlease!

Empowering You Takes the Twin Cities

We had our first SOLD OUT Empowering You event ever thanks to Minnesota.  It was great to see suite owners from all 6 locations in the area come out to learn more about social media marketing and retail best practices. From a hands-on interactive morning with Taylor from Matrix to a very informative afternoon with Bio Ionic in the afternoon, there was something for everyone.  Not to mention all of the fantastic products raffled off at the end.

New Locations coming to Minnesota

To add to the excitement, Minnesota also has 2 new locations in the works. While in town for the Empowering You event, Jo-Lynn got to see the plans for the swanky Uptown model with owner April Simek, as well as the modern sister store to Burnsville in Apple Valley with owner Diana Kokku.  Both are already signing leases and building momentum for their summer openings with the help of their concierges, Miriah and Melissa. We are thrilled to see that both locations are off to a great start!

They are always so proud of what they’ve created and accomplished.”

Hard Work and Passion: Team Barber Boy

From a young age, Justin Boykin had an affinity for playing with clippers and admiring the work of barbers. Born and raised in Mobile, AL, the passion that started at a young age only made him work even harder to achieve success quickly.

“One day, I saw a sign on White’s Barber College that said ‘No GED required’, so I went for it!” Justin shares. Ten years later, he owns his own business with his own employees at Salons by JC Mobile.

Building Team Barber Boy

Immediately after earning his barbering license, Justin began working at local barber shops in Mobile. “I started at a barbershop where I worked for 7 years until it shut down. Then, I moved to a local Barbershop and Hair Salon for 2 years,” he says.

From both salons, Justin established a steady list of clientele of all ages, but he also gained many of his clients through social media.

“Without social media, there is no #TeamBarberBoy and I’d still only be known in the city of Mobile” he proudly exclaims.

After establishing a steady clientele list, Justin was poised for more growth and independence in his barbering business. He began to look at his options when he learned about Salons by JC Mobile.

The Suite Life in Mobile

Justin had previously heard about Salons by JC from friends around him. “I’d heard about Salons by JC and how you get to start your own small business and decorate your suite how you want. It looked like Salons by JC was the perfect place for growth and a different variety of clientele.”

He quickly contacted the location and set up a meeting with Salon Owner, Rita Carter. Little did he know how quickly he would establish himself at Salons by JC. “I didn’t know the day we met would be the day I got my key to my very own salon suite, it was like love at first sight! All I saw was growth and greatness,” he excitedly shares.

Owner Rita Carter loves the energy Justin brings into the salon, saying “he is a joy to work with and everyone here loves him. He has one of the coolest looking suites in our salon.”

Justin takes great pride in his Team Barber Boy brand and his salon suite, as displayed by the two billboards he has advertising his business in Mobile, AL. “He is a hustler and stays booked!” Rita says.

With several magazine interviews under his belt and five months now at Salons by JC Mobile, Justin is optimistic about his future at Salons by JC. “The people are great here, the vibe is great, I can’t ask for more. My customers love it and my growth is coming along great. The best move I could have ever done.”

We are thrilled to share Justin’s story and his pride for Team Barber Boy. Thank you for choosing Salons by JC!
