Texas Lawmaker: House Bill 1705 Will No Longer Abolish Cosmetology License Requirement

Salons by JC applauds Texas lawmakers for ensuring that cosmetologists must have a license to practice in the beauty industry.  The proposal to abolish cosmetology licensing as a requirement to practice in Texas was removed from HR Bill 1705. Our independent salon suite owners care about the safety of each of their clients. This proposal would have clearly put that in jeopardy. An adjustment of any kind to abolish the need for a cosmetology license would cause severe shock waves throughout the industry.

Natural Perfection in Denton

It didn’t take long for Amber Miranda to realize the traditional path to a career wasn’t for her.  “I was in university studying to be a journalist, something I was not very interested in when I began having a series of severe panic attacks that continued for several months,” she shared.

After this short time, Amber realized she needed some time off to reflect on where she really needed – and wanted to be. But this reflective period didn’t last long.

“Three months in, I was bored and decided I wanted to study another field ‘just for fun’”.

Amber came from a family of creative individuals and entrepreneurs, which helped her decide which endeavor she would decide to conquer next. She took an interest in both cosmetology and culinary school.

The Cosmetology school was closer to her house so she started there. “Come the first day, I knew I had made the right choice”

Social Media Moves

In 2012, Amber completed her cosmetology license and began an apprenticeship at a natural hair salon in DeSoto, Texas, a suburb south of Dallas. She earned her specialty in the care of curly and tightly coiled hair.

“It was a whole new experience. It was the first time I was able to study in a creative environment doing something I’d never tried before,” she says of her cosmetology education.

A few years later, Amber relocated to Denton, TX after her husband accepted a new job. She moved to Denton with no clientele.

Looking to build her client list fast, Amber turned to social media to build her brand. “Social media helped me the most when I relocated to Denton. It gave me the opportunity to quickly find and build a list of new clients from nothing,” Amber shares.

Finding new clientele on social media proved to help Amber’s business immensely. She says “Many platforms are free, which is an enormous benefit to a startup business. Once you know who you are, social media is a great way to showcase that to the world.”

Expanding at Salons by JC

As Amber’s clientele list continued to grow, she realized she not only needed a bigger space but needed a complete change for her career and business. “I knew what I wanted my clients to experience during a session with me down to the environment, the atmosphere, the service,” she stated.

The desire to improve the client experience took Amber to Salons by JC Denton in 2015 where she opened up her salon: Curl Suite Denton. “Salons by JC has an excellent setup and offered me what I wanted, as well as allows me to be in an environment surrounded  by other quality beauty professionals that were doing the same thing.”

As Amber continued to work diligently at her craft, she began to outgrow the salon suite she was in as her clientele, services offered and business flourished.

She wanted to branch out and own a ‘bigger salon,” Salons by JC Denton owner, Brenda Reynolds, said. “We explained that she didn’t need to leave as we could make her dreams possible by knocking down walls.”

Now, Amber has been able to grow her business within Salons by JC Denton. “My larger suite has allowed me to take on three other stylists and braiding students here and there,” she exclaimed. “We’re able to offer more services that our clients are excited about.”

Salons by JC helped Amber grow and keep the focus on her clientele with hands-on salon concierges and owners. She states, “Steve and Brenda have been very supportive. I love both of our salon concierges, they keep the building on point.”

The salon suite concept has kept the business needs for her salon simple and straightforward, which Amber says “those things are so important for a small business to stay organized.”

Not only is Amber able to tend to the hair needs of her own clients, but she can also make sure all of their beauty needs are taken care of inside Salons by JC. “I love that I can send a client down the hall to get their nails done or massage services – other salons send me clients, as well.”

“I spent a lot of time, and I still do, deciding what I want people to take away from an experience in my salon,” she proudly shares.

Inspiration Beyond the Salon

Amber continues to expand her business and take on additional employees.  She has now focused on bringing awareness and inspiration to those dealing with stigmatized medical conditions.

“I’m currently pursuing a diagnosis of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), the condition formerly known as Asperger’s Syndrome. It is a difficult and expensive process but I hope to be able to inspire others with this condition that it’s okay to be yourself,” Amber exclaims.

Being different has helped Amber’s beauty business skyrocket and provide a one-of-a-kind experience to all of her clients, and her business only looks to grow even more. “Cosmetology for me was experimental and fun. It still is.”

Giving from the Heart: Teal Tea with SBJC

On Saturday, March 16th, 10 of our San Antonio Salons by JC suite owners from Salons by JC Dominion Ridge, Salons by JC Forum, and Salons by JC Westwood,  took time out of their busy Saturday morning to volunteer at the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition-San Antonio Chapter’s 2nd annual Teal Tea and Survivor Fashion Show.  The High Tea event featured a vendor market, finger foods and of course different teas.  Attendees were encouraged to dress in their best “high tea” attire and wear hats or fascinators.

Maria Gonzales, Ovarian Cancer Survivor and recipient of Hello Gorgeous! makeover from Salons by JC

Last July, we had the pleasure of meeting Maria Gonzales, a 4-time ovarian cancer fighter and recipient of a Hello Gorgeous! makeover. Despite battling at an aggressive pace, Maria manages to show encouragement to those who have been recently diagnosed.  “The Salons by JC ladies were truly professional, sweet, and nice during our hair and makeup time before we rocked the runway.  Although I chose to sport my bald head, they had encouraging words for me.  Thank you to everyone who pampered us and made us feel super special.”

“It was a pleasure to be able to do the makeup for all of the ladies that to me are true warriors.  It’s not easy to be able to go through treatments and still have to be able to work, be a mom, a wife even on the days that you physically can’t.  Each of these ladies have all my respect, and I feel blessed to be able to be a part of that fashion show”, stated Alejandra Canizales from Beauty Rocks Hair Studio.

Millie Levi, co-owner of Beauty Rocks Hair Studio said, “it was a great pleasure meeting such a strong group of women, learning from them and having the opportunity to share with them this special day and making them look more beautiful than they already are”.

San Antonio Chapter Director, Amber Wood, was delighted to have Salons by JC support this event in such a huge way, “Salons By JC’s participation was beyond what could have been expected. The expertise that the stylists brought was immeasurable.  Not only did these stylists donate their time to make our survivors feel pampered and beautiful for the day, but they gave them tips for them to take home and use.  From make-up to hair care during re-growth, to scalp care during treatment, these tips are invaluable to these women. They gave them more than a day of beauty, your stylists gave them the confidence and tips to carry that into their everyday lives giving them even more power in their fight.”

Karen Toledo, from Jackie’s Divine Stylism at Salons by JC Forum said, “ all of the ladies that I did makeup on were so young and had conquered such a big battle, it made my volunteer work that much more special and enjoyable.  They were all so beautiful inside and out!”

“It was an honor to be part of this wonderful event, I feel good that I was able to enhance the beauty of these wonderful ladies”, said Jacquelin Florian, owner of Jackie’s Divine Stylism.

Stacey Avery, owner of Hair by Stacey Avery located at Salons by JC Westwood said, “Working with these inspiring women was an amazing experience.  Each one had a story to share and a reason to strut their stuff at the fashion show.  I’m blessed to do what I love every day, for the love of hair and make the day of a beautiful woman, to make her feel extra special.  Tammy, who walked the runway, said I made her feel like a queen, all in a days work for this blessed stylist”.

A huge part of being a suite owner at Salons by JC is the community.  We strive to create a professional environment where you not only grow your business, but you can grow your community.  We are proud of our suite owners for their dedication to their craft and their selfless acts of kindness.  Amber Wood summed up the emotion in all of us that Saturday morning, “Not one of our survivors left on Saturday feeling anything less than stunning and empowered.  That is a gift you cannot buy, and all of them, along with the San Antonio chapter of NOCC, are eternally grateful for the participation of Salons By JC and their stylists”.

Empowering You: Charlotte

The first Empowering You event of 2019 was held just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina at The Pinnacle Institute of Cosmetology last week, boasting over 50 attendees from our North Carolina locations.  SalonCentric and Redken partnered with Salons by JC to bring a wealth of knowledge to the suite owners, concierges, and franchisees in attendance.   Subjects discussed at the workshop were social media marketing best practices, how to give yourself a $20,000 raise without changing your prices, and how to pay your rent with retail.

“This class was awesome!  We had a lot of takeaways on how to increase our income behind the chair, including how to sell retail,” said Missy Armentrout from Salons by JC High Point.  “One of the insights that stood out to me was how important it is to be engaged and stay engaged with posting and responding to comments.”

In addition to great education and fantastic product goody bags, the Redken folks made the day engaging and fun with interactive activities, upbeat music and relatable stories from their experiences in the industry.  Let’s face it, in the beauty industry we’ve seen it all, and it feels good to be reminded that we’re all in this together whether we’ve been doing it for 3 years or 30 years.

Jennifer Nealy of Hair Favor at Salons by JC Greensboro has been in the business for over 25 years and found herself very engaged in the class.  “I really loved this class today!  It gave me lots of insight on social media marketing and new ways to increase my finances which is always a plus.  I learned some really nice styling tips too, so it was all around a great day.  I’m really thankful for y’all putting on this class and I hope to attend more!”

Our next Empowering You class will be in Minneapolis, MN in April.  It will be the first time Matrix is providing the education for us.  The same topics will be covered but in a new way.  We can’t wait to see what they will bring to the table.  We look forward to seeing you there!

The Diamond Process with Kaliesha Sanders

In honor of International Women’s Day, we are thrilled to share the story of a fabulously talented salon suite owner out of Salons by JC Mobile – Kaliesha Sanders.

With a supreme passion for hair, beauty, and all things glam, Kaliesha Sanders knew from a young age she wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry.

Born and raised in Mobile, AL, Kaliesha has been in the beauty industry since 2009 and has worked in various salons since 2011.

Since completing her Cosmetology trade training at the Bryant Center Vocational School her Senior year in high school, Kaliesha was inspired to begin what would be a fruitful career as a beauty professional.

Passion Starts Young

“I just knew I wanted a career that would make me happy; something that didn’t have as many limits as most professions,” Kaliesha shares about her early start in the industry.

While completing her high school education, she began to do her peers’ hair where she “fell in love wholeheartedly” with transforming their style and looks.

After graduating, Kaliesha had big dreams of attending a prestigious fashion program in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Her family ties kept her close to Alabama.

“My mom stated the distance from would be a problem, she also had me look up salaries and told me to be realistic about what I wanted to do for a living.”

From there, she chose to pursue a full education in Cosmetology from Bishop State Community College, an experience she looks back on with pride.

“Ther was never a dull moment at beauty school. There were times when things got challenging, but I never wanted to quit.” Kaliesha quickly realized she was where she was meant to be, stating “Not only did I realize how much I love people, but I found joy in making them look and feel amazing.”

Growing to Salons by JC Mobile

Once Kaliesha was in the beauty industry workforce, she experienced tremendous growth fast and established her own branding. When choosing a name for her brand, she knew she wanted to incorporate two things she loves: gold and anything that shines.

“I branded my business in 2015 naming it The Diamond Process, where you discover the jewel in you,” she shares. “The Diamond Process specializes in refinement; no transformation is too big or too small and anything is possible.”

Kaliesha was working in local open floor salons but was in need of something more for her Diamond Process. “I worked in salons where I didn’t have creative freedom, freedom with business hours because I love to work all day and night – I needed freedom and control,” she stated.

It was then that Kaliesha found Salons by JC Mobile in 2016, where she established her own salon. “My career changed for the better when I chose to come to Salons by JC.” Kaliesha was able to create her own salon, her hours, and her clients loved the space.

“Everything here is perfect. Everyone is friendly, the environment is safe and luxurious. I couldn’t ask for anything more,” she says of Salons by JC Mobile.

Celebrity Success and Master Classes

Since joining Salons by JC in 2016, Kaliesha has been able to pursue significant opportunities in the beauty industry and now specializes in hair, makeup, and wig creation in her spare time.

She is a part of the prestigious Legion of GLAM, an organization put together by celebrity wig maker, Terrence Davidson, whose distinguished clientele include rapper Nicki Minaj, Patti Labelle, Mary J. Blige, and more.

In August 2018, she joined Terrence Davidson at the Bronner Brothers International Hairshow for a hair showcase.

Another highlight of her career was doing behind the scenes work on famed rapper Snoop Dogg’s stageplay, Redemption of a Dogg.

As she grows even more in the beauty industry, Kaliesha has also had the opportunity to host two exclusive makeup classes, Beginners Brunch/Eyeshadow and Contour Luncheon in April 2018 and Shine Session 101 last October.

Next up in her bustling career, Kaiesha will be traveling with The Legion of GLAM showcasing their hair talents and teaching at beauty schools across the country.

Kaliesha Sanders has proven herself to be a passionate, dominant salon suite owner at Salons by JC Mobile for the past 3 years, and is sure to bring even more success to her already fruitful career in the beauty industry.

We’re proud to have phenomenally talented stylists, congratulations, Kaliesha!
