The Year of Empowerment

It is always hard to believe that another year has come and a new one is on the horizon.  Many times we sit back and reflect on things we have done and the things we have yet to do.  Our company is like any other. We had many wins and we also had our hurdles to jump. As a team, we grew and with that growth came added incentive.  Incentives for you, our franchisees, concierges and our suite owners.

“2018 exceeded expectations with outstanding unit economics, numerous store openings, and zero closures”, stated Drew Johnston, VP of Operations for Salons by JC.

“Our franchisee’s commitment to the brand is unparalleled.  You can be assured our corporate staff is ready to achieve all the goals it has set for themselves as we welcome 2019”.

Salon Business Coach, Jo-Lynn Greenman adds, “The past 4 months of 2018 have been a whirlwind!”   Jo-Lynn spends the majority of her time traveling and getting to know the needs of our different franchisees and their concierges.  “It has been an exciting ride and I am looking forward to doing more in 2019.”

With 10 Empowering You events scheduled throughout the U.S  and a ton of SalonCentric “Glam on the Go” airstream visits in the works, we are in for some fun!

“Seeing the growth of some of these locations and how they have embraced their marketing and become mini marketing powerhouses is incredible”, states Marlene Romo Flores, Franchise Marketing Coordinator.

With the creation of the in-house team at the end of 2017, many franchisees have taken full advantage of social media training, microsite assistance, creative workshops, marketing development and the endless support from the corporate team.  “We love when a franchisee or concierge shares with us what they created or how they used what we taught them and it worked!” stated, Romo Flores.

The SBJC 2019 Crystal Ball looks something like this:

-We are assured to have double-digit unit growth surpassing 2018 numbers

-System occupancy and unit metrics will outpace 2018 figures

-The Corporate Marketing Team, Franchisee Marketing Council and Zion & Zion will reinvigorate the brand pushing lead flow to new heights

-Training events across the country will reach hundreds of suite owners with business building skills and social media tools

-Empowering You programs will continue to evolve and gain a foothold in the system. We are clearly committed to the professional and personal growth of our salon professionals!

But that’s not all…our newest salon footprint is set to unveil in 2019.  This will further separate us from the competition as the leading national premier Salon Suite.

We are thankful for the efforts of our franchisees, preferred vendors and most certainly the thousands of beauty professionals that occupy our suites. Everybody at the home office is looking forward to rolling-up their sleeves and providing outstanding service in 2019.

Salons by JC Celebrates SA’s top hairstylist

Eileen Perez, owner of Hair by Eileen at our Salons by JC New Braunfels -Creekside location, has been named the top San Antonio’s top hair stylist by the San Antonio Current.

Eileen Perez

L’ANZA Healing Hair Care Educator

A fourteen year veteran of the beauty industry, Eileen graduated from Mims Classic Beauty College with her Cosmetology and Instructors License.  She developed and executed cosmetology programs in collaboration with L’ANZA Healing Hair Care, which had her traveling as an educator.

In 2014, while Eileen was developing a cosmetology program at a high school in Kyle, TX, she reached out to RDA Pro-Mart in San Marcos since she wanted to use L’ANZA products for the course.  “The store owner came to meet me and brought a L’ANZA brand consultant with them.  During the course of the conversation, the L’ANZA brand consultant mentioned to me that I would be a good candidate to become a L’ANZA educator”, stated Eileen.  “I used to educate for the brand FHI Heat and for Mike Karg in the past so becoming an educator for L’ANZA would be a great opportunity”. From there, she grew a deep love for L’ANZA products.

Eileen feels very fortunate to have found her “hair family” in the L’ANZA brand, ” I love that L’ANZA is a healthy hair care brand. The more you use L’ANZA the better your hair looks and feels. It’s the first brand that I have fallen in love with the color and product line. I only use and sell L’ANZA. The product sells itself”.

Cosmetology Instructor and Behind the Chair

Eileen has successfully developed three cosmetology programs at three different high schools in Texas.  She did all of this while still working behind the chair.  “I did that for 3 years, now I only work for myself and educate with L’ANZA.  Occasionally, I will sub at some beauty colleges or tutor to provide continuing education when called upon, ” states Eileen.

Eileen feels that being an educator with a brand, as well as her past experience as a cosmetology instructor, helps her grow as an artist and as a professional.  Her clients also appreciate that she is an educator.  “I take pride in my work, how I look and how I present myself.  I am all about customer service, professional image, education, and healthy hair.  Having a nice, consistent, clean, personable and educated stylist is what my clients love about working with me.”

Eileen boasts a clientele of local celebrities, “It’s very inspiring and I’m very honored to get to work with local celebrities,” Eileen says. “Everyone I’ve ever worked with has been so sweet and wonderful.  Working with them has been a great way to network and build a community in the industry”.

Eileen also gives back to her community.  In August she put together a back to school event where she gave free haircuts to underprivileged kids in the New Braunfels area to get them ready for the school year.  It’s the little gestures of kindness that go a long way and make memorable impressions.

Creating the Ultimate Experience

What makes Eileen a favorite with her clients is receiving a full assessment of the color and condition of your hair, an evaluation of your lifestyle and how all of these components play a role in the look and feel of your hair.

“I am very personable and eager to build a relationship with every client,” Eileen explains. “I take my time, and I’m very meticulous with my work. Consultation and communication are vital in giving clients what they want and like.”

The Move to New Braunfels

“I decided to start my business inside a Salons By JC because I was looking for my own space- a place that I could customize and make entirely my own.  The suite life seemed like an ideal fit.  After looking at other salon suite concepts, what sold me at Salons by JC Forum was the concierge, Charlotte.  It’s all about first impressions and customer service and she had me sold by being a fantastic concierge and overall welcoming person”, Eileen shares.

Eileen recently moved locations heading 20 minutes north I-35 to our Salons by JC New Braunfels location.  “Though I’m sad to be leaving my awesome community here, I’m SO excited to see how much I’ll enjoy my new location at Creekside. I love having my own mini salon in a professional, welcoming environment!”

Deciding to move to a New Braunfels location now makes running her own salon suite easier for Eileen.  “I moved here 3 years ago while I was teaching high school cosmetology in Kyle. The commute was getting to me and I needed to live in the middle of my salon and the school”, Eileen shares. It made perfect sense for Eileen to move her business to the Creekside location once her lease was up at Forum.

We love all that Eileen brings as suite owner to the Salons by JC community.  We wish you the best of luck in 2019 and congratulations on your “Best of” honor.  Thank you, Eileen, for choosing Salons by JC!

Concierge Superstars

Minnetonka’s Stellar Concierge

Salons by JC Minnetonka’s Miriah Clasen is the perfect example of a hard-working concierge who brings nothing but the best to the table in everything she does.

Salons by JC Concierge, Miriah Clasen

Marvelous Miriah

Miriah always had a strong desire to help other people. She began her academic studies with the intention of making a career in the healthcare industry. Once Miriah began working, her focus shifted towards customer service where she felt there would be more opportunity for her.

“I moved to the heart of the mini-apple in 2015,” Miriah shares. “I found a job as a salon receptionist on at a high-end salon. Growing up with two Aunts who were master stylists in very high-end salons placed me in familiar territory within the beauty industry.”

A year into her salon receptionist position, Miriah’s passion for the beauty industry intensified. A few of her colleagues suggested she look into a new salon suite concept called Salons by JC.  After learning more about the idea she realized she could be of value to the suite owners that operate there.  She put in her application for the available Concierge position.

Everyday She’s Hustlin’

Miriah leads the charge by balancing two Salons by JC locations. She has taken one location to capacity and looks towards reaching the same goal with the second location.

“Balancing two locations has been exactly what I was looking for!” Miriah exclaimed with excitement. “This opportunity has given me the challenge and growth I desired. I was initially hired to oversee Southdale Square. In November 2016, I only had to juggle 7 suite owners. Easy Peasy! I started managing the “behind the scenes” of both locations in June of 2017 and two years later 7 Suite Owners turned into 70.”

Miriah and fellow suite owners

Managing two Salons by JC locations poses many challenges.  Miriah maintains a consistent game plan to keep both locations running smoothly. “I’ve implemented identical systems at both locations,” Miriah states. “This helps us run things the same way while still letting us add a bit of our own character to each location”.  A second Concierge was recently added to the mix, Imani.  “We began rotating locations weekly, this has helped Imani and I understand how each salon functions and also familiarize ourselves with the suite owners,” Miriah shares.

Miriah’s experience as a Concierge at Salons by JC has exceeded all of her expectations.  She is grateful for all the adventures and opportunities that this position has provided her. Hosting grand openings and planning celebrations – to attending marketing and social media classes to enhance her abilities.   She loves every minute of this chapter in her life including being invited on a trip to Chicago for the Empowering You Workshop.

April Simek, Owner of Minnetonka and Southdale Square with Miriah in Chicago

“The secret to my success has been building personal relationships with the suite owners and their guests,” Miriah says. “Adding our personal touch and a familiar face at the front desk, makes everyone feel right at home.”

“When you walk in, you are always greeted with a smile and excellent customer service,” Miriah adds. “I’ve come to build strong relationships with the suite owners, I can be more detailed with guests and their needs when guiding them. Your experience at our locations is warm and inviting.  I truly believe that attracts great referrals and reviews which helps the business grow exponentially for us and our beauty professionals.”

Superb Concierge Service

As a concierge, Miriah ensures every suite owner is set up for success by equipping them with the right tools. “I want to help them be as successful as I know they can be. I believe if I go above and beyond to help them and provide the tools they need they can stay focused on what’s important. That’s what being a concierge is all about. We are not just a smile at the front door. Along with helping them take that first step in suite ownership, we also partner with each professional to assist with their future goals to success.”

Miriah and April

On top of all of the help and success she has brought to our Salons by JC locations, Miriah has her own goals in mind for 2019.  “My number one goal as a concierge is to see Salons by JC grow fiscally and broader in scope. Along with maintaining full capacity in Minnetonka, I am looking forward to helping April expand and open a third location!”

Miriah’s work ethic encompasses the distinction that is the Salons by JC Concierge.  As salon owner April Simek looks to open her third location, we know that under the managerial eye of Miriah, this location will find fast success. It’s a pleasure having Miriah as one of the many reasons Salons by JC is a stand out amongst the others in the salon suite industry.  We at the corporate office wish you the best of luck and look forward to all the great things you will accomplish.  Congratulations on being our featured story on our blog today.

Beauty Rocks Reigns Supreme at Dominion Ridge

Glam. Trend. Style. This is everything you can expect and more when you enter the Beauty Rocks Hair Studio, located at the ritzy Salons by JC Dominion Ridge in San Antonio, TX.  Salon suite owners Alejandra Canizales and Millie Sutton have used their 12 years of experience as beauty professionals and created the best hair experience in San Antonio.

Latina Boss Ladies

Alejandra Canizales is originally from Northern Mexico and Millie Sutton from Guadalajara, Mexico.  The two met and became best friends while in high school in San Antonio, Texas.  “Millie and I are best friends,” Alejandra shares. “She was the first person I met when I moved to the United States, we’re like sisters.”  The two decided that they wanted a career in the beauty industry.

Alejandra Canizales and Millie Sutton

While searching for schools that would benefit them, they decided on The Paul Mitchell School.  At the time, the school had just opened its doors in San Antonio and Millie was part of their inaugural graduating class.  An honors graduate, she was later asked to return to complete the Instructor’s program.  Alejandra, known to all as Ale’, soon followed her friend and enrolled where she also graduated with honors.

After graduation the two quickly found work at different salons in San Antonio.  They ended up working together at a salon for 2 and a half years, but always knew they wanted to be on their own one day.  “We always knew we wanted to have a salon suite,” stated Ale’.

Ale’ and Millie recently celebrated 7 years as independent beauty professionals at Salons by JC.  They absolutely love not only working with one another but also the successful salon business they built together.  “Working with my best friend is the greatest”, states Millie.  “We work well together and individually and that has created a wonderful partnership.”  Being comfortable around each other on a daily basis makes it easy for them to grow their business and grow as professionals.

Creating the Perfect Beauty Environment

Beauty Rocks Hair Studio originally started at the Salons by JC Westwood location.  Once it was announced that the Salons by JC Dominion Ridge location would be opening, they jumped at the chance to land a suite at this illustrious neighborhood in San Antonio.  “We received a message that the newest Salons by JC would be opening at the Dominion and we visited the location and fell in love”, stated Ale’.  For some beauty professionals, this move would have caused some stress. Mainly the stress of losing clients.  That was not the case in this instance.  The Beauty Rocks clients followed Ale’ and Millie.  “We asked our clients if they would follow us.  The majority of our clients reside in the Helotes area, which is not far from the Dominion location.  All of our clients were excited about our new suite and location”, stated Ale’

“I love their knowledge and experience”, says Lenette Flores, a client who followed them from the Westwood location.  Another devoted client, Cassie Flores said, “I love the personality that the entire suite has, its warm and inviting. I do not mind the drive because they do exceptional work”.  These two clients have been with Beauty Rocks Hair Studio for their 7 year run at Salons by JC.

Ale’ and Millie founded their salon on the simple principles of making each client feel beautiful within a chic environment.  “We love to pamper our clientele!  We always do our best to keep our environment fun,” Millie says.   “We have complimentary champagne, mimosas, wine, and coffee for our clients.  We enjoy great conversation with them and always make them feel and look their best when they walk out our door.”

Wine and Coffee Bar at Beauty Rocks Hair Studio

Another huge attribute to their success is the comfort level they have with their clients.  “If I’m ever out of the salon and my clients need their hair done, I trust Millie with my clients and she does the same for me,” Ale’ says.

An added bonus to each client is the time they each take to consult each person that sits in their chair on how to care for their hair.  Millie and Ale’ do their best to make sure their clients are well informed about what’s best for their hair and what products will work best.  “We love what we do and we love to share our knowledge with our clientele” Ale’ exclaims.

Stylists to Latino and Tejano Stars

Their undeniable talent has given these ladies amazing opportunities.  Both are preferred hairstylists for many of the San Antonio local Spanish language News and TV celebrities.  Through their network of local celebrity clients, numerous invites have been afforded to them to style some of the hottest Latino artists and celebrities in South Texas.  “For 2 years in a row, we’ve been fortunate enough to be the official hair and makeup artists for Univision’s Premios Texas Awards and the Tejano Awards in Austin.  Those experiences have been amazing!” Ale’ shares.

The beauties behind Beauty Rocks Hair Studio, Millie Sutton and Alejandra Canizales

Millie says, “These experiences have given us a different perspective of the beauty industry.  Working in a fast-paced, time managed live event environment is completely different from our day to day salon where clients receive one-on-one attention with no time frame. It has been a wonderful learning experience for both of us.”

Beauty Rocks at Salons by JC

Both ladies have enjoyed being salon suite owners at Salons by JC Dominion Ridge. “I love the freedom, accessibility, and being in charge of my own hours at Salons by JC.” Ale’ says. As independent beauty professionals Salons by JC enhances your experience by providing you the tools to create your distinct salon, on your terms.

“I love that we are able to be independent, but we are still very well taken care of by the Salons by JC team. We have an amazing Concierge, Vida, who makes sure our needs and our those of our clients are well taken care of.” Millie adds.  It’s those small details that make the difference as Salon Suite owners at any Salons by JC.

What’s next for these successful ladies?  “We will continue to attend classes regularly to keep up with the latest beauty trends in the industry,” states Millie.  “We are also going to be moving!”, stated an excited Ale’.  “We will be moving to a bigger window suite at the Dominion location that just became available.”

With a new bigger suite to kick off their year and a client list that keeps growing by word of mouth, Ale’ and Millie’s new year looks to be shining brightly.  We appreciate you and are grateful that you are a part of our Salons by JC community.  We wish you continued success in your market.  Enjoy your new suite!
