Walking the Walk: The Original Salon Suite Owners

When Salons by JC initially opened its doors 20 years ago, a familial feel filled the air. Twenty years later, it’s still there and rings true in conversations we recently had with some of our original salon suite owners who gravitated toward the concept and were the first to make their salon homes within our walls.

Making A Difference In People’s Lives

Marie Echelmeyer,  who has been a Salons by JC salon suite owner since May 3, 1999, opened her doors of I Win Hair Salon as soon as she heard about the new concept. She had previously rented a station in an open floor salon, and the environment was not for her, so she was excited about the change. She has been styling hair for more than 32 years, and she has been at Salons by JC for 19 of those.  “I love having my own suite, and Jack and Cecil are truly awesome. They have stood behind me 100 percent,” she said. “I specialized in Japanese hair straightening, and I love it. I really get to make a difference in people’s lives. Being able to take frizzy, curly hair or otherwise and make it pin straight is awesome. Many of my clients fly into Dallas just to get the service, and I love being able to have this kind of impact on their style and lives.”

She has been a part of Salons by JC since the beginning and has enjoyed watching it grow. Just like her own business, Salons by JC and I Win Hair have blossomed and bloomed together.

Enjoying The Independence

Shuree McKinney is another original salon suite owner, having opened Bangs: The Hair Salon on December 15, 1998. She’s been a hairdresser in Texas for 24 years. She decided when she started working in the industry that she was going to make it more than just a job, where she’d always be thinking about the money. Shuree desired to make this her career. She’s a certified colorist in everything you could ever imagine.

“I enjoy the independence that Salons by JC provides, and I like being able to set my own hours. If there is ever any issue, I always have someone to talk to – and I love that,” said Shuree. “I can say I am totally stress-free. Not too many people in America can say that. I love what I do. I have the freedom to come & go as I please. I don’t have demands and quotas like much of the corporate world. I get to think outside the box ALL THE TIME.”

She loves giving her clients a total look when someone comes and tells her that they need a total makeover and want her to do her thing. “It’s rewarding because you can really use your gift, and I have been able to do it for so long,” she said. “Cecil always tells me, I’m not old school, I’m just a fixture around here, and I love that about him.”

Comfortable and Relaxed Atmosphere

Misty Barrett, owner of Hair by Misty, is another of the amazing originals. She opened her business in October 6, 1998. She knew at the age of five that she wanted to do hair.

Salons by JC has and still feels like family. It’s a beautiful place,” she said. “Jack and Cecil have always been awesome, and it’s always been comfortable and relaxed. What Cecil and the team do to appreciate us is amazing – the cookouts, taking folks out during the holidays. It’s huge that he appreciates all of us.”  Because of this, she’s remained at Salons by JC for 20 years and remained a loyal salon suite owner. She also prides herself on loyalty to her customers. For them and for her, Salons by JC feels like home.

That Oh So Special Feeling

On November 30, 1998, Melissa Finn joined the ranks of some of the first in the door to own a suite. She opened Salon Savvy & Gifts and occupied four suites. She recently retired after having owned the business inside Salons by JC for 20 years.  “When Jack & Cecil opened, my partner and I wanted to try it out to see how we’d like it. I didn’t think we’d stay there as long as we did,” she said. “It is wonderful to work at Salons by JC, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone. They’re fair and generous and they go above and beyond.

Making her clients feel special and exclusive is something that Melissa truly loved about being a salon suite owner, “we always laughed and had a good time. I wanted my clients to feel better about themselves when the service was complete”  And you could always see it in their vibe as they walked out of the salon.  Their energy was electrifying.

The Excitement of Having Your Own Space

Sandra Limoges Holeman opened her shop on July 1, 1999. Since then, she’s only moved suites once for a bit more space and has enjoyed the atmosphere for the past 20 years.  “The ability to be able to have your own space, do your work, and come and go as you need to without any micromanaging is something that I truly appreciate,” she said. “I love what I do, and having a welcoming, comfortable workspace really adds to it.”

One of the services that is a standout for her is natural coloring and cuts. She has an incredible talent for combining the color to match the cut and giving her clients fresh, new looks that they adore. She commends both the environment and those who occupy the suites around her for a great overall ambiance at the original Dallas location. “We’re all business owners and doing this for the right reasons – to bring in people from the public that fit and match us as human beings and take care of those people to the best of our ability,” said Sandra.

Who Doesn’t Love The Drama-Free Environment?

Tanya Freeman started her business, Fifty Shades, in 1987. Twelve years later, she was also one of the first to embark into the Salons by JC  salon suite adventure.  “I wanted to be a dentist or dental hygienist, but my senior year, I worked in a dentist’s office, and there was so much blood – I freaked out. I felt like my dreams were shot,” said Tanya. “My friend’s mom owned a cosmetology school, so I enrolled and loved it from the moment I was 18. Thirty-one years later, I still haven’t stopped.”

She loves the accommodating nature of Salons by JC, and she said it has always been that way since day one. She enjoys the drama-free environment and that it doesn’t feel like work.  “I love to do nails & toes. It makes my clients feel great, and I also started a skincare company, which has helped my clients better themselves in even more aspects of their lives and features.”

Our salons would not be the same without the suite owners. Each of these individuals and many others that inhabit our walls are truly amazing, each in their own right and light. We celebrate our originals and are grateful for each of you – and those to come.

Salons by JC’s Leading Ladies: The First Franchisees

As we continue to celebrate the last twenty years in business, one of our most significant milestones for growth happened more than six years ago, when we began franchising Salons by JC. We had enthusiastic, energetic individuals ready to jump in feet first and take on the adventure of opening new Salons by JC locations and expanding our community to new markets across the nation.

Today, we highlight three of our leading ladies, Dana Bounds, Rita Carter, and Carol Westlund, who opened in Austin, TX in 2012, Mobile, AL in 2012, and Dallas, TX in 2013, respectively. As we continue to grow, it is important for us to recognize pioneers like these three women that made it possible for us to continue to catapult our growth.

Dana Bounds – Salons by JC Parkside Pavilion

“One of my favorite memories is sitting down for the first time with Jack, Cecil, and Steve in a coffee shop to discuss purchasing their first franchise location,” said Bounds. ”I quickly saw how down to earth and genuine they were and still are today.”

Dana loves to empower the salon suite owners that surround her each day. They’re what make each of our franchises unique, and our franchisees do an amazing job and making them feel that they are right where they need to be in their professions.

“I started my seventh year in business this past January, and I still get so excited to help provide an opportunity to individuals who want to own their own business and take their expertise to the next level,” she said. “I consider myself a partner to each salon suite owner. I want to provide them with a quality environment and experience for each of their clients”

Dana Bounds – Owner of Salons by JC South Austin

Dana has continued to grow as a professional, as well, in the process. She points to the power of social media as being a great asset for her – and advises that other prospective franchisees keep this in mind when launching and running their own franchises. She found hidden abilities over the years, especially when in a crunch. She has learned new things about the construction and permitting process and is not too proud to beg and plead with City officials for what she has needed to succeed.

“Thinking back to the first day in the coffee shop, it has been truly amazing to be a part of Salons by JC’s explosive growth over the last few years. It is always exciting to meet other franchise and salon suite owners and hear about their journey and trust in our brand,” said Dana. “Our success starts at the heart of the corporate leadership and carries through to the heart of the leadership within each location and staying true to our slogan, ‘We are passionate about you!’

Rita Carter – Salons by JC Mobile

Rita opened her Salons by JC franchise in Mobile, AL in 2012. From day one, she’s been a proud owner.

“I think for me seeing the transformation from an empty shell to a luxurious salon suite business made me proud to be a part of this business and what it had to offer to the people in the health and beauty industry,” she said.

Owning a franchise has been an eye-opener for her and has created great transformation in her life and allowed Rita to cultivate relationships that are of the highest value to her.

“I have many defining moments,” said Rita. “I love the fact that this concept has created an atmosphere for people of different cultures and ethnicities to learn from one another and build relationships with people you otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet.”

Rita Carter – Owner of Salons by JC Mobile, AL

Rita’s craft and ownership has helped her to grow as a person and professional, and it has also allowed her to support others in their professional development and transformations.

“To see our salon suite owners grow their business and become successful in their field is what makes us successful,” she said. “It is a great feeling to have someone tell you how happy they are that they joined our family and love coming to their own suite to work, and I hear that on a regular basis.”

Carol Westlund – Salons by JC Dallas Casa Linda Plaza

As for Carol, she opened her doors in Dallas on March 25, 2013. She looked back to just after her opening day as a defining moment for her franchise.

“One of the moments that sticks in my mind the most was right after we opened. There was a salon not far from us that abruptly closed. The tenants were panicked because they needed a place to work, and they basically swarmed my salon,” said Carol. “It was neat because I felt like I was truly helping them continue their livelihood, and they had a place to go. We worked our tails off to get everything set up for everybody, and it really brought us all together. We’re more like family than tenants.”

Like Dana, she is grateful for the incredible salon suite owners who have filled the suites of the Dallas location.

“I regard all of my salon suite owners as my greatest assets. Without them, I wouldn’t have a business,” she said. “I try to treat them like a family and with the greatest respect.”

Carol was initially introduced to Salons by JC in a different role before becoming a franchisee. She was a massage therapist at the original location and thought they had a tremendous business model. In the early years, in addition to being the co-founder, Cecil was also the resident maintenance man, and she got to know him and more about the business over the years.

“I told him that if they ever started selling franchises, I would be interested. When that opportunity arose, I jumped on it,” said Carol. “I was absolutely terrified, but I did it. I am in a great location, which has added to our success. Additionally, I have incredible salon suite owners, which keeps bringing more great tenants in.”

Carol Westlund – Owner of Salons by JC Dallas Casa Linda

Carol also pointed to the enhanced resources, marketing education, and support with scoping out locations, among other things, as assets that Salons by JC has continued to improve and provide over the years of her franchise ownership.

“The company has grown into a sophisticated and special salon,” said Carol. “It’s amazing what they have achieved and accomplished over the years. I would never have started this business if not for the confidence I had in Cecil and Jack. It’s the best thing I’ve done, and I’m grateful.”

We are grateful, too, for every one of our franchisees and the positive impact they have on our business today and that which they’ll have for years to come.

Salons by JC Concierge: Millee Allen – 20 Years of Service

Since the start of Salons by JC over twenty years ago, the elite concierge has been a stand out factor. These individuals are more than just a smiling face at every  location. Our full-service concierges are dedicated to making sure everything that can be done to provide a wonderful experience for all, is done, and more.

As with every innovative program, there had to be an individual to take the first leap into something new and be the pioneer for those who came after. Today, we are happy to share with you our very first Salons by JC concierge, Millee Allen.

Salons by JC Dallas Concierge Desk

Meet Millee

There are a few individuals that can claim to have been with Salons by JC since the beginning. One of those amazing people is Millee Allen. She got her start at Salons by JC twenty years ago at the first location founders Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller ever opened, located in North Dallas.

“Before Salons by JC, I managed a very large open concept salon and I had been there for twelve years,” Millee shared. “One day a group of my very closest friends from the salon said they had heard about this new salon suite concept, so they wanted to go see what it was all about.”

After the visit to Salons by JC, they were immediately drawn to it and ready to make their move.  Now came the deciding factor, would Millee relocate with them?  “All the very best people headed to Salons by JC,” Millee said. “After learning more about the salon suite concept for myself, I realized I had to make a decision.”  Within a week, Millee had made the move to Salons by JC.

The Concierge

The Salons by JC Concierge is unlike anything else in the salon suite industry. They provide salon suite owners with assistance on many different levels, so they can focus on growing their small business, while the concierge oversees all salon logistics.

“The concierge is someone who does more than the traditional salon manager model,” Millee explains.  “Our goal is to make every single person feel appreciated when they walk through the doors.”

In addition to making sure the daily salon location logistics run properly, Millee also took ownership of creating an online presence. “I created a Facebook page and started posting fun things like birthdays, spa days, and cool things the salon suite owners were doing.”  One of her big projects was to get people to share content and also teaching the importance of utilizing Google to drive business to salon suite owners. She continues to share the importance of having a social presence in order to grow a successful small salon business.

Twenty years of the Salons by JC Concierge

Twenty years have come and gone, but Millee says the new and exciting things she gets to be a part of every day keep the Concierge position evolving.

“It’s fun and something I thoroughly enjoy. For those of us that have been here for a long time, we’ve gotten to know every single person that has been a part of this,” said Millee.

For Millee, twenty years of Salons by JC is a special occasion. It’s a testament to the dedication of the founders all the way down to the clients that walk through the doors every day.

“I truly feel like we become a family,” she shares. “If anyone is feeling sick the first thing we do is ask ‘Okay, what can we do to make them feel better?’ or if someone is in need of assistance ‘What can we do to help them through this?’ I think a lot of this stems from Jack and Cecil. They’re really caring guys.”

As for her role and feelings about developing the role of the Concierge, Millee says, “It’s a sense of pride. It’s being able to have created something that is lasting and continues to grow.”

With all the new ideas coming to Salons by JC, from the Orlando Hair Show workshop to working alongside amazing programs like Hello Gorgeous!, and of course, working with the Corporate Team on new marketing initiatives,  the role of the concierge continues to flourish and remain a staple in the day to day operations of Salons by JC.

Millee Allen

It is because of people like Millee that the Salons by JC continues to succeed. We thank Millee for all the time and wonderful things she has done at Salons by JC, and can’t wait for all the fun things we’ll see from her in the future!

Celebrating 20 Years of Salons by JC

Salons by JC has always been more than just a salon. For twenty years, it has been a place where stylists and other beauty professionals could go to take the reins of their own careers, start their own business and become their own bosses. It harbors a community that thrives on building each other up and helping one another develop new ideas and relationships along the way. As we celebrate twenty years of Salons by JC, co-owners Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller, along with President Steve Griffey, reflect on the journey thus far, and the Salons by JC vision going forward.

President Steve Griffey (far left) with co-founder Cecil Miller (far right) with 2017 Franchisees of the Year Garrett and Mike Bedrin at the 2017 Owners Conference.

From Humble Beginnings

The journey began over twenty years ago when co-owner, Jack Griffey, was told by his wife that the doors to the salon she had served for years was closing its doors. Faced with the realization that she was going to have to relocate her clientele to another open-floor salon location, she decided it was time to try something different.

She found a place that resembled salon suite ownership. The space she worked in was no larger than a closet, but it gave her the opportunity to take her clients with her to a space she could call her own. One day, she invited her husband, Jack, to check out where she had been working.

“I went down one day to check it out for myself,” Jack recalled. “Right away I could tell that this concept was something I could create.”

After that trip, Jack went to the drawing board, crunched some numbers and realized this was an idea he wanted to pursue- but he couldn’t pursue it alone. He recruited his good friend and fellow retail businessman, Cecil Miller, for help.

“We were looking to get involved in something other than retail,” Cecil said. “I initially thought he was crazy. No way did I want to get involved the salon business- because I thought it just wouldn’t be for me.” About three weeks later, while viewing other salon locations in Miami and giving the idea some deeper thought, Cecil called Jack back and asked if he was still looking for a partner to start the salon suite concept with.

Not too long after that Jack and Cecil formed a partnership and started learning what they were going to have to do to bring their idea to market. It was the beginning of an epic adventure, and a lasting twenty-year partnership.

Opening the Doors

Getting the first location operational was a journey in itself. After Jack and Cecil were both on board to tackle creating a salon suite concept of their very own, handling the logistics became a learning process.

Though both were no strangers to business and the retail industry, neither of them had taken on entrepreneurship in the past. “It was hard to find people who would take us seriously in the beginning,” Jack said.

From real estate agents to bank lenders, Jack and Cecil made it known that what they lacked at the time in entrepreneurial experience, they more than made up for in determination to turn their vision into reality.

After many trials and errors, the two finally found a gentleman in north Dallas that was able to provide the real estate, and a bank that believed in the merit of the salon suite concept to help with the funding.

Once those two items were in place, the two began looking into what they wanted their salon suites to look like, visually. “We did a lot of going back and visiting the location my wife worked at to see how they built it,” Jack said. Once they had their vision ready, they had all the pieces they need to open their first location.

In September of 1998, Salons by JC opened the doors to their first location, just north of Dallas, Texas.

More than a Salon

Since opening the doors of the first north Dallas location, growth has not slowed down for Salons by JC. President Steve Griffey remembers his role in the growth of his father’s business.

“I had just moved back from Houston to San Antonio in 2001 and asked my dad and Cecil if they were interested in opening up a location in San Antonio. Once they were on board, we started the process of finding real estate.”

The move down south proved to be difficult, but not impossible. At the time, San Antonio did not have a salon suite concept and finding a 10,000 square foot space to operate a salon was unheard of. Eventually, they came across an opportunity in the Lincoln Heights area, and from there, Steve managed and leased the location.

“Once we had a rhythm, we kept doing what we did well and started looking for other San Antonio locations to expand to.” What followed was a chain of openings that included the Huebner Commons, Legacy Shopping Center, and followed by several other corporate locations and eventually, national franchising.

Twenty Years of Salons by JC

Since the beginning of the journey, Salons by JC has become more than a space for stylists to set up shop or for clients to receive spa services. It has become a beacon for the beauty community to express freedom, creativity and help harbor the client/stylist relationship. To date, Salons by JC has helped over 3,000 stylists become their own boss through the salon suite model.

“This concept provides the stylists an opportunity to not only increase their income by thirty to forty percent,” Cecil explained, “but it also gives them an opportunity to show their clients what they know and what they like to do.”

A big part of what Salons by JC hopes to do in the future for salons suite owners is to provide education. “We want to offer educational opportunities, not necessarily on how to provide services,” Steve explains, “but rather more business education so suite owners have the tools to become more profitable, sell product and improve their own skills.”

As we celebrate twenty years of Salons by JC, Jack, Cecil and Steve can’t help but reflect on what the milestone means to them. “Anytime you see a business get to twenty years old, it’s a testament to the founders and to the mission of Salons by JC,” Steve said. “We’re doing something here worthwhile.”

Through the trials and successes the past twenty years have brought, the team at Salons by JC corporate is proud to have found their niche with such an amazing community of beauty professionals.

As the book closes on the first twenty years of the Salons by JC story, the team, concierges, stylists and beauty professionals continue to light the way with their passion for customer service and beauty industry talent. New and exciting things are to come, but today, we celebrate twenty years of hard work, community and creativity at Salons by JC.

Meet Round Rock’s Crystal Vasquez

For the past 11 years, Crystal Vasquez boosted her skills in every way. After Cosmetology school, she started out at a barber shop, so she could master men’s haircuts. “Cosmetology school doesn’t teach you how to do a men’s edge up or a bald fade, and I wanted to do it all,” she says.

The otherwise all-male shop was a chair rental based barbershop, where few clients would trust her with their hair.  The Barbers she worked with took her under their wings and taught her to master the art. Still, she needed to make more money, so she moved another salon to learn more about hair color. She soon moved on to managing and joined that salon franchise’s National Design Team. She advanced from developing her own classes to becoming a trainer.

“It’s a lot of work and I had to study on my own while managing and working behind the chair,” recalls Crystal.  “As a manager, I tripled the location’s numbers in one year. But I still wasn’t putting enough money in my pocket.”

Then one day another employee, who was also a friend, asked her a question that left her thunderstruck: “How are we going to pay for our kids’ college?”

Planning for the Future

“My father, who had his own business, had been continually asking me why I was still working for someone else. Having three kids, I had to plan for their needs”, said Crystal.  “I knew two other trainers who had moved to Salons by JC in Round Rock, TX,  we toured the location and discovered that Salons by JC had a good reputation and had been in business for a long time, which was important. Two weeks later, I took a leap of faith and signed a lease.”

An experienced manager, Crystal also made sure she was prepared to go the salon suite rental route. She looked at her numbers to be sure she had enough clients. What was key to her success was her relationships with her clients?  “Once you’ve solved someone’s hair problems and have delivered superior customer service, you develop a great relationship,” she says.

Another consideration was pricing. She ended up setting her prices just a bit higher than her clients were used to while stressing that in a suite, her services would be highly personalized with no interruptions. She’s been in her suite, Parallel Salon in Round Rock, TX, for two years now and is implementing yearly modest price increases.

What Ensures Success the Most

Since joining the Salons by JC family, Crystal says her income has doubled, even when she takes self-employment taxes into account.  “And, I’m working part-time just like I did before because family time is so important.”

In addition to having strong client connections, Crystal’s success lies in her ability to offer any range of services she chooses, something most employees can’t do.  “I love doing waxing, too; it’s an easy upsell,” she adds.  Hoping to customize her services even more, she is in the process of moving to a larger suite and also planning her next steps in her career.

“I’m considering getting certified in doing lash extensions,” she says. “Several of my clients have them, and it would be a good thing to have under my belt.”
