Suite of the Year: Blush Beauty Bar Miami

Salons by JC is proud to announce Blush Beauty Bar Miami as the winner of Suite of the Year for 2020.  Salon suite owners and sisters, Olga Ferrer and Yamilet Lopez are the proud creators of this beautiful suite that is located at Salons by JC Kendall Palms in the Miami-Dade area.  The sisters contacted franchisees Peter and Cyndi Scher in 2018 to join their Kendale Lakes location, but at that time it was at capacity.  Fast forward to 2020 when their newest location Kendall Palms was getting ready to open which had the perfect sized suite they needed for their business.

Creating the Perfect Suite

To be successful as a suite owner you should create a beautiful and inviting ambiance where the clients feel relaxed. The experience should be one filled with positivity, uplifting energy, and serenity,” stated Yamilet Lopez.  The opportunity given to them at Salons by JC has afforded them the ability to create the space they envisioned for themselves and their clientele.  Using calming colors and decor, the sisters created their perfect space complete with a charming little coffee bar.  “Clients should feel that the person behind the chair is someone who stays current in the industry and is always consistent in their craft.  Their work should embody passion and kindness. Not only will the clients be excited about their next session but they will recommend you to friends and family.” The creation of their amazing suite was based on their passion for the beauty industry and their dedication to their clients.  Their vision came to life when they became salon suite owners at Salons by JC.

Olga and Yamilet joined the Salons by JC Kendall Palms community 7 months ago and as they say, “it’s been magical!”  Location owners Peter and Cyndi Scher were ecstatic to find out their suite owners won top honors.  “We were so excited to find out they had been chosen as the winners.  We’re delighted to finally have Yamilet and Olga join our suites.  We started talking to these two marvelous sisters in 2018 and we didn’t have the suite size they were looking for in our Kendale Lakes location.  In 2020 they contacted us again and we had what they were looking for.  They were so excited to join the Salons by JC brand and we knew they were the perfect fit for us. Their work is amazing, their social media is on point, their professionalism is over the top, their personalities are the best, and their suite is just fabulous!  We were so excited when they won Suite of the Year,” stated an elated Cyndi Scher.

Olga and Yamilet chose Salons by JC to grow their business because of how warm and esthetically pleasing it was from the moment you walked in the doors.  “If there is anything that we need our Concierge Maribel or owners Peter and Cyndi will accommodate us.  They have been an absolute pleasure to work with,” stated 20-year beauty industry veteran Yamilet.  Olga Ferrer is a 27 year veteran in the beauty business, former owner of her own salon, and also a former chair renter.  “Running my own salon and supervising the stylists became overwhelming.  We sold the business and moved to a salon in Doral as chair renters.  That salon ended up being sold and that is when we discovered the salon suite concept at Salons by JC,” stated Olga.  “We fell in love with the salon suites and waited for the Kendall Palms location to open.”  After visiting the Kendale Lakes location, the sisters knew that their next place to set up their business would be at Salons by JC.  The duo created a very welcoming and comfortable space for themselves and their guests.  Their cooling colors, rustic, and chic decor highlighted by a radiant chandelier adds that touch of magic that expresses Olga and Yamilet’s unique personality.  What does the former salon owner think of the salon suite life? “This is better than owning your own business. It’s better than having your own salon,” states Olga.  Yamilet adds, “The freedom, the stability, and your success are determined by the choices you make. Why not take a chance on you? Salons by JC Concierge of the Year: Megan Taylor

Salons by JC Valrico have great reason to celebrate as their concierge, Megan Taylor, was named Concierge of the Year for the salon suite franchise.  Megan has been a part of the Salons by JC community since August 2016.  Megan was chosen from several outstanding candidates that were nominated by their franchise owners.  She is the fourth Concierge to receive this honor.

The Vision 

Megan was discovered by Salons by JC Valrico owner, Denise Cooke, in a rather unique way.  “Eight years ago I read a heartfelt letter posted on a neighborhood social media page written by Megan’s employer, at the time, about how amazing she is and how sorry they were to have to part ways with her as they no longer needed a full-time Nanny.  I was not looking for an employee at the time but felt compelled to meet with her.  At the end of that meeting, Megan was hired as our Nanny for my 2-year-old.  I didn’t have a Salons by JC location yet.  Little did she know I had a vision and a plan for her to step into the Concierge role,” stated Denise.    After a little convincing, Megan agreed to become the part-time Concierge at the Valrico location and soon after became full-time.

Salon Suite Success

When asked what the most rewarding part of her job is Megan proudly says it’s supporting the dreams of so many beauty professionals.  “Most of the time when they walk in for a tour and then sign a lease with us they say how nervous they are or how scary it is for them to take this next step for their business.  It’s amazing to see what happens when they have the support and encouragement from us.  I absolutely love when they come up to me a few months later and say how they have doubled their income, how their clients love our salon, and how it was the best decision of their life.”  Megan loves being in a position to be the salon suite owner’s biggest supporter, cheerleader, and encourager.

Salons by JC Valrico owner, Denise Cooke, says Megan is an invaluable asset to the salon suite business and is always eager to take on new challenges.  “She has earned the trust and respect of all our beauty professionals. Megan is skilled at juggling a lot while staying calm, cool, and collected.  She can have those heartfelt conversations and the tough ones when needed.  She has a high degree of emotional intelligence, a drive for excellence, and the ability to maintain order like no other all while spreading inspiration and joy.”

It’s All About the Little Things

We asked Megan how she dealt with any obstacles at the salon and how she overcomes them.  “Lots of communication and understanding. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Whether it is a beauty professional, client, or building problem, the key to a positive resolution is to stay positive and open-minded. Also, working as a team with Denise. We brainstorm and talk through most problems so we know we are making a good long-term decision for the salon.” Megan feels that a Concierge needs to be caring, understanding, professional, relationship-oriented, and have a servant’s heart.  She also shared some advice for those who are in the role of Concierge within our franchise.  “ Don’t forget all the small things we do are actually the big things.  From that big warm smile that welcomes each guest and salon suite owner, cleaning up all the fly-away hairs in the hallway, complimenting their work daily, celebrating a birthday or anniversary, to being a constant listening ear.  It all matters.  It is what created the big ripple effect in their lives and business.  The small things might be mundane and meaningless to you most days, but those are the things that they brag about in the long run.”  Megan has created a positive culture at Salons by JC Valrico, one she takes great pride in and protects.  “You do everything in your power to remain true to it and in turn, the salon suite owners will feel safe in a positive, respectful, and supportive atmosphere.”

Salons by JC Franchisee of the Year: John & Mindy Ratcliff

Salons by JC’s virtual franchise owner conference kicked off this week.  The annual conference celebrates the achievements of the company as a whole and acknowledges those franchisees who stand out in the salon suite industry.  The distinct honor of Franchisee of the Year was bestowed upon John and Mindy Ratcliff.  They began their relationship with the salon suite dynasty in 2013.

“I looked at several different concepts before signing on with the Salons by JC Franchise,” stated John Ratcliff.  After visiting a couple of Salons by JC locations and speaking with the beauty professionals he discovered how happy they were to be there.  “Once I met Jack, Cecil, and Steve, I knew that these folks were people that I wanted to partner with”.  They opened their first location in Round Rock, Texas in 2014.  The second location opened in Austin, Texas in 2017 and they acquired 3 locations within the franchise system in the Houston, Texas area in 2019 and 2020.

The Empowerment of Being a Franchise Owner

Being a franchisee changed the lives of both John and Mindy with the successful opening of their Round Rock location.  “I went from being a stay-at-home Mom to embarking on a new career”, stated Mindy.  “This industry empowers a large number of women and helps them become a successful and vibrant part of the business world”.  As Mindy was making her mark learning about daily operations and marketing for her businesses, John felt confident enough to leave his full-time job at the end of 2016.  “Just like the suite owners, I am so grateful to be my own boss and set my own hours.  I haven’t looked back since”, stated an elated John.  An added bonus for the Ratcliff’s is watching their salon suite owners become independent just like they did when they invested in the salon suite franchise.

Advice as You Grow Your Locations

As a Salons by JC franchise owner you are encouraged to grow your enterprise by expanding your salon suite portfolio.  John and Mindy started off with one location in 2014 and in seven years have increased that number to 5 salon suite locations in Texas.  As they developed and acquired their locations, one constant remained – being present.  “Being present at your current location during build-out and leasing of the second location is vital.  The salon suite owners want to know that you are still there for them and won’t be abandoning them as you get ready to open up the next location,” stated Mindy.  The hiring of a rockstar concierge is key to keeping Salons by JC distinct in the salon suite industry.  “Having a concierge that runs the show making sure you are touring well and people are excited about the location makes a huge difference,” stated Mindy.

When they acquired the 3 locations in the Houston area in 2019 and 2020 they created a plan to make sure the transition was an easy one for all involved.  “The first thing that John and I did was have a meeting with the suite owners.  We let them know that rent wasn’t going up and we listened to them and their needs.  The little things that they needed to be done to be successful in the industry,” stated Mindy.  Within the first 4 weeks of ownership, they had knocked out all the things on their list that needed to be done at each salon.  Focus then shifted to the concierges and making sure each was well trained and up to date with everything that was available to them from the corporate office.  Mindy visits the Houston locations monthly and is in constant communication with her team of concierges daily checking in on them making sure everything is running smoothly.

If they could do it all over again what are some things team Ratcliff would change to make it easier on themselves?  “Plan for it! Being a first-time franchisee is more work than you think, but the rewards are worth it,” states Mindy.  John adds, “ Don’t be afraid to ask questions and know that your hard work will pay off!”  They also added that being a part of the Salons by JC franchise system has been the key to their success because you are able to interact with the other franchisees, ask questions, bounce ideas off of each other, and not have to recreate the wheel.  Mindy also added, “If I were to do it all over again, I would have spent more time visiting each location, talking with the suite owners finding out what they like in their suites and what they would change.  Looking at all the options for design and functionality closely.”  This research was key to the success of the expansion of the Ratcliff territories and helped in building out the new Salons by JC locations.

Salons by JC Uptown brings the eclectic vibe to the “mini apple”

Once a Columbia Sportswear store, the 11,268 square foot space is a dream in the heart of the Twin Cities. Owner April Simek had been looking for the perfect space for over 3 years before opening her location in July of 2019. The salon is located in the thriving area of Uptown in Minneapolis giving it a “city vibe” with walking accessibility to other small businesses in the city sector.

The two-story glass building gives you a breathtaking view of the city.  When you arrive at the location you are greeted by our 2019 Salons by JC Concierge of the Year, Miriah Clasen who calls Salons by JC Uptown home. “There are many things that make our location the most unique within the franchise,” states Miriah. “We have an 85” screen TV that plays music videos for our guests’ enjoyment, a lounge area that includes a coffee bar and freestyle coke machine.”

Each suite has 12-foot ceiling glass walls allowing other clients and suite owners to view the talent within Salons by JC Uptown. This location even has a meditation room to allow the suite owners to destress and regroup after a long day.  “The meditation room is a place of calmness, an area to unwind,” states Miriah.  “It is that quiet space that allows our salon suite owners to refocus.”

Huntington Beach: Success in the OC

Huntington Beach, known for its beautiful beaches in Southern California, is the newest home to Salons by JC. To use one word to describe this location would be, pivot. Owner Moin Hussaini, concierge Donna, and their suite owners have all had to pivot as they have had to adjust to obstacles since the location’s opening in June.

Overcoming the Unknown in Huntington Beach

“I made a drastic decision in March. At that time I faced the prospect of an indefinite shutdown. My construction was stopped and my lease was starting in July. The landlord was completely unresponsive to my inquiries about abatement,” stated Moin Hussaini.  “I realized that if I wanted to lease quickly I’d need to provide added assurance to nervous beauty professionals about rent during shutdowns.”  Hussaini changed his messaging on his advertising to focus on the benefits of being in a salon suite during this pandemic.  He also emphasized being the only salon suites to have a full-time concierge to ensure protocols were followed and proper sanitation of the location.

Moving away from fewer sales language on his ads helped him in working on his presence in the area.  “Messages were more empathetic to the shutdown impact.  No beauty professionals were seriously looking at that time given the uncertainty.”  Hussaini promoted his involvement in the business and also actively participated in all tours so that the potential suite owners would get acquainted with him.  “I heavily promoted my inclusion of a rent abatement clause in case of shutdowns.  This was what the industry was already doing, but adding the language to the contracts provided much-needed reassurance to scared prospects,” stated Hussaini.

Working in Favor of Salon Suites

The Huntington Beach location along with our other California locations have been some of the hardest hit during this pandemic.  The California rules and regulations have been extremely strict.  Hussaini found that even with strict rules in California, they worked in favor of salon suites.  “Clients in salons had to keep 6 feet apart and effectively impose capacity constraints. Because salon suites are private and 1-on-1, we were automatically socially distanced and the capacity constraints did not apply. Additionally, the clientele was no longer allowed to wait in the lobby. They were summoned by their service provider by cell phone or text. And everyone was required to wear a mask.”

Masking was a main focus for Salons by JC Huntington Beach in order to keep everyone safe and has proved to be a difficult task at times.  “Huntington Beach is a prominent center of resistance to masking mandates. We had to strike a balance between making everyone feel safe, but not being too rigid. The tone I struck in all my communications was one of “convincing” rather than “telling”. I used evidence and reason and empathy in my emails.”  Hussaini’s background as a medical device executive at a ventilator company came in clutch as he drew upon personal experiences with victims of this disease.

Creating that Safe Space

Great communication along with an outstanding concierge, Donna Culpepper, enabled the suite owners to feel comfortable in their new environment.  “Donna, our incredible concierge, was key to reinforcing the message on masking. She behaves like an owner. She loves to work and is particularly conscientious about creating a safe environment,” stated Hussaini.  Donna’s warm and bubbly personality made it easy for the suite owners and prospects to gravitate towards her.  “When prospects would visit competitors -where a tenant would show them around- and then come to us, the difference was clear. We had a community, the other spaces were just that -spaces.”

Picking the Right Business Model

Within the past few months, Hussaini and his location have endured a whirlwind of experiences and have successfully kept moving forward.  “I am much more confident now than I was before I started. I successfully launched a business in the hard of possible climates.”  Hussaini credits his success to choosing the right business model.  “Salons by JC salons suites are uniquely positioned to win. Not only are suites the future of salons, our quality, and the concierge are huge differentiators. If I had to give myself advice when I started, I’d just say don’t be nervous. It is going to work out better than you ever thought it would.”

Salon Suite Franchise Expands in Florida

The Florida market increased in salon suite franchises by 3 locations in the last few months.  Salons by JC opened up Kendall Palm, Brandon, and Orlando in the sunshine state.  Franchise veteran Denise Cooke and new franchisee Urjeet Patel were the latest to open their locations.  Remaining optimistic during a very stressful time aided both of them with successful location openings.

Urjeet Patel recalls thinking what had he gotten himself into when all salons closed in his area.  “When I was still in the permitting phase, Florida went into shut down.” recalls Patel.  “I had secured real estate and signed a lease at the time so there were a hundred thoughts running through my head over an uncertain future.”   Those thoughts quickly vanished when Patel started his marketing campaigns for his Baldwin Park location in Orlando.  The interest from beauty professionals in the area gave him insight into exactly how many beauty professionals were looking for salon suites.

Patel kept his intended marketing budget but made changes to his messaging.  Communicating that Salons by JC was a safe place to house their business during an uncertain time played a key role.  “Our messaging reassured beauty professionals that we would be a one on one experience as opposed to an open salon where many stylists and clients are at close proximity.  I believe this was crucial in securing suite owners during our construction phase and during our 1st month of opening,” stated Patel.

Retention and Opening The Second Salon

Salon suite franchise owner Denise Cooke of Salons by JC Valrico opened her second location in Brandon, FL with a revamped strategy.  “We knew we needed to adapt quickly, communicate confidently and employ a solid safety plan based on the best available date so our suite owners could thrive,” stated Cooke.  She used the same strategy for both of her locations to ease the minds of her current salon suite owners and prospects.  “I increased organic social media posts and focused the messaging on social distancing, private suites, and how the suite life offers more control along with the ‘Salons by JC Cares’ campaign.”

For the Brandon location, Cooke used storefront window wraps during pre-leasing that focused on safety and leasing in a controlled environment.  “Staying current on the ever-changing landscape of COVID was critical to communicating confidence to our prospects.   Attitude was key.”   The safety protocols employed in Valrico and Brandon were to create the safest environment for the suite owners and their guests.  “We implemented daily cleaning of high touch points by the concierge 3 times a day using a hospital-grade disinfectant with a 60 second kill time.  We shared the data of this disinfectant with our suite owners and made it available for purchase at our cost to them.”  Cooke also installed an air purification system on each HVAC, hand sanitizer stations, and implemented traffic control within the building.  These added touches brought peace of mind to her suite owners and their guests.

Effective Virtual Tours

Both Cooke and Patel utilized virtual meeting apps to be able to give tours for their interested leads.  “Not being able to take the potential suite owners to see the physical location was tough and we had to be innovative,” stated Patel.  “Zoom presentations helped my potential suite owners get a good feel about the salon and give them an idea of what Salons by JC are all about.”  Patel also created a power point presentation that he would review when speaking to his interested leads.  This allowed them to see the layout of the salon and also the limitless possibilities to help their business bloom.

Cooke used GoToMeeting for every tour.  “I didn’t meet anyone until move-in day, it was unique but it worked.  In a lot of ways, this forced us to actually communicate more.  It gave us an opportunity to establish relationships before we opened.”  

Both franchisees expressed how the key to their success was making their suite owners feel confident about Salons by JC.  “I made sure that they were aware of our full-time concierge that not only keeps a watchful eye over who walks in and out of the building but also is responsible for the sanitation of the salon,” stated Patel.  At the Brandon location, tours were longer and conversations were lengthier than usual.  “This was an opportunity to demonstrate confidence, communicate our strategy and show how we can adapt and thrive,” stated Cooke.

Suite Words of Wisdom 

We asked Cooke and Patel what words of advice they would give franchisees who are getting ready to open their first location or their next location during this time.  As Cooke put it, “Serve the food hot. Be genuine. The number one priority for the first year is building relationships, it is the foundation for success.”   With the hot topic of location health safety, Patel added, “stress the point that Salons by JC is the safer working environment over a traditional salon space.  Focusing your efforts on addressing all questions and concerns related to COVID in your marketing messaging will help get those leases signed.”  A firm understanding of the local competition’s culture and management is also a key strategic piece.  As Cooke stated, “it is not just lease pricing and current promotions, it’s knowing your competition in your market.”  A vital component to all Salons by JC locations is the concierge. Acquiring the right fit for your location is extremely important.  “The concierge is an invaluable resource to our salon suite franchise,” stated Patel.     Afterall, Salons by JC is the place to be.

Kendall Palm: Salon Suite Success During COVID-19

For Peter and Cyndi Scher opening their Salons by JC Kendall Palms location was going to be like clockwork for these seasoned salon suite veterans.  The 2019 Franchisees of the Year did not think that they would be going head to head with a new competitor to their market, COVID-19.

Pivotal Marketing Moves 

The Scher’s quickly went to work to make changes to an already successful marketing campaign.  “We changed our marketing from no weeks free to 4 weeks free, then 8 weeks free”, stated Cyndi Scher.  “Everyone who started with us on our opening day received 8 weeks free”.  They didn’t stop there.  Cyndi and Peter increased their marketing spend on Google and also began advertising in Spanish to reach their target market.  Their Kendale Lakes and Kendall Palm locations are located in the Miami-Dade area which is predominantly Latino markets.

Suite Assurance

They made sure suite owners and their guests would feel comfortable and safe while coming to the location.  “The suite concept is a blessing during this time of social distancing. The suite owners can be in their suite one on one with their clients, wearing their masks, while having complete control of who they see.”  The Scher’s also put up signs in English and Spanish letting everyone know that masks were required at their location.  They also removed all seating to prevent anyone from lingering in the hallways.  “We also have a thorough cleaning service come to our location several times a week,” stated Peter Scher.

Maribel, the Kendall Palm Concierge, has been a tremendous asset to the leasing success of this location during this pandemic.  “Our suite owners immediately feel at ease knowing Maribel is just as concerned about COVID-19 safety as they are,” stated Cyndi.  “She was available to help with furniture and product deliveries and leading each and every guest to their suite for services.” Maribel has been working with the Scher’s for over two years.  “Her overall knowledge of how the suites are managed, how she genuinely cares for each suite owner’s success, and her professionalism are felt by all of our potential suite owners when they inquire about leasing.”

Making Successful Adjustments

Peter and Cyndi rolled with the punches of this pandemic and have come out on top.  Cyndi has always practiced using FaceTime or WhatsApp Video to connect with her suite owners so it was not a far stretch for her to begin touring via these video apps.  “We toured using FaceTime and WhatsApp and also took all the necessary precautions and wear masks to make any potential suite owner feel comfortable when they arrived to tour in person,” stated Cyndi.  “We also always sent our tours to our Instagram page to view the suites we had featured.”  The Scher’s also stated that they were very patient and took the time to answer all questions presented to them.

Some Words of Advice

Cyndi and Peter cannot stress enough the important role their concierge played in communicating and being responsive during the early stage of the pandemic.  “Your concierge will make or break you.  If you have a fabulous concierge, then it will be that much easier to have prospects join your suites, retain suite owners, and referrals.  Pay them well, look for property management experience, and show your appreciation for them often!.”  Cyndi also added, “be ready to offer more free weeks than you have planned- you never know.”

Southlake welcomes newest Salons by JC Texas location

Adapt. This is what our franchise had to do due to the challenges that they faced with our present circumstances.  Owners had to make sure they were in accordance with new guidelines as ordered by their state’s Cosmetology boards.  John and Susan Roberts are the owners of Salons by JC Southlake in the Dallas area.  They opened their location in July of this year at fifty percent capacity.  Their leasing keeps gaining momentum as they use COVID-19 to their advantage.

The advantage 

“We used COVID-19 to our advantage when leasing,” stated John Roberts. Targeting salon professionals that were ready to be on their own and who were unsure if their traditional salon would reopen was a key factor in their leasing momentum.  “We started advertising for ‘private, clean spaces’ for stylists and their clients.  This worked out great for us.”

Beauty professionals were searching for a clean and contained space where they would feel safe while working.  “The majority of our suite owners came from large salons where shampoo bowls and other areas were being shared.  This caused concern for cross-contamination.”

John and his wife, Susan share the concierge duties at their Southlake location.  Being at the location every day gives them the opportunity to share the front desk duties and also complete various tasks.  “We love our salon space and it shows when we are giving tours,” stated John.  “We make sure to reply to all calls, texts, and emails as soon as possible”.

Sharing the role of concierge has allowed John and Susan to discover the needs of their suite owners. “We have found that most suite owners just want someone that they can talk to or express a concern to without filling out a form or sending an email making them wait for a reply that may take days or sometimes weeks,” stated John.  “They love being able to walk to the front desk or send us a text and know that their issue will be resolved right away.”   Taking such great care of their location is encouraging their suite owners to motivate their friends to move over to the Southlake location.  “We have everything that the suite owner wants from ample parking, free laundry, a large break room/training room, and a “Sonic” ice machine.  No one else has that.”

“Although the pandemic is scary this business model is a great solution,” stated John.  Salons by JC prides itself on creating the perfect space for its salon suite owners to thrive.  “It provided the perfect space for our guests to get their services done without fear that people are going to be close by contaminating their space.”

Common area

As suite owners, you have full control over your space.  You control your environment and have the time to keep it clean and sanitary providing a healthy area for your clientele.  This allows your guest to be comfortable as they receive their service.

“We walked everyone through our process of making sure that the salon is cleaned daily, face masks are required, and all COVID requirements were being met and would be enforced at our location.”

Words of advice for new franchisees

We asked John and Susan to share some nuggets of wisdom to new Salons by JC franchisees that are working on opening their locations in 2021.  Some key points he touched on were; be patient, utilize the Salons by JC franchise network, ask more questions, and talk to the corporate office.  “Know that this is not an overnight process and that it takes time.  Slow and steady is the key,” stated John.

Salons by JC welcomes New Jersey to the salon suite franchise system

“The Garden State” is the newest home to the Salons by JC salon suite franchise.  The addition of New Jersey to our already illustrious portfolio brings a ray of light during this pandemic of 2020.  

Northern New Jersey

Garret and Mike Bedrin, the 2017 Franchisees of the Year and owners of The Bedrin Organization based in New Jersey, will open the 1st salon suite in Bergen County in Wyckoff, NJ in November.  “We are beyond thrilled to bring seasoned beauty professionals of New Jersey the opportunity to own their own business”, stated Garret Bedrin.

The Bedrin’s are 3rd generation retailers and commercial real estate developers and have had their pulse on New Jersey’s small business economy for over 70 years.  “There is no doubt that professionals in the beauty, health, and wellness industry are some of the hardest working and talented professionals who deserve the right to own their own business.  We have fought for these rights in Newark at the State Board of Cosmetology and in Trenton at the Department of Consumer Affairs.  Even after 5 years of doors slamming in our faces, we never gave up.  We are excited to open our doors and share Salons by JC with our local neighborhoods.”  In addition to Wyckoff, the Bedrin’s plan on opening up a location in Paramus and Ridgewood in 2021.

Southern New Jersey

Meanwhile, in the Southern part of New Jersey, Jim McGuiness is working to develop locations in Shrewsbury, Middletown, and Marlboro.  “We are very excited to open up new Salons by JC locations in New Jersey.  This is a great market for salon suites given the population density, household incomes, and the number of salons. Most surrounding states already embrace salon suites. New Jersey is late to the game and beauty professionals have been waiting for our state to adopt similar practices like New York, Connecticut, and Maryland”, stated McGuiness.

The New Jersey Cosmetology board received many requests from salon suite providers and in 2019 decided it was a good idea to approve the “newest” concept in salon ownership. “The approval requires adherence to specific guidelines and requirements.  We feel the opportunity to enter the market and provide salon ownership is a great opportunity and responsibility.”

“The pre-opening interest in our Shrewsbury location is excellent and we look forward to creating the premier salon suite design and opportunity for beauty professionals to build their business and free themselves from the traditional salon model. This is an exciting time and we are proud to enable this change”, stated an excited McGuiness.

Salons by JC hosts First Salon Professional Virtual Mini Conference

On October 1st and 2nd, Salons by JC hosted its first virtual conference especially crafted for our salon professionals. Through our partnership with SalonCentric, we were able to secure our host for the event, Michael Cole.  Michael has over 30 years in the beauty industry as a stylist, manager, multiple salon owner, and executive chain director.  Michael wrote a book entitled, “A Little Off the Top” which has helped over a million salon professionals breakthrough to a more prosperous and purposeful career.

Tap Into Your Potential

The conference spanned over 2 days and roughly 6 hours in total and had over 280 franchise owners, concierges, and salon professionals register for this free event.  It also featured Salons by JC Salon Business Coach Mona Echard as a guest host.  The conference also had special guests, Christina Payton, owner of The House of Blondes located inside of Salons by JC Naples.  Christina is also our 2019 Suite Owner of the Year.  Salons by JC Baybrook Mall Concierge, Brenda Olivarez, who worked with Michael at one point in her career.

Bettering Your Best

During the conference the main topic centered around igniting the passion of each person who participated.  Topics of discussion ranged from knowing your place in the industry, the importance of a mentor, the six dimensions of wellness, and exploding your pay to name a few.  As each topic was discussed, we saw the engagement and energy rise within the participants.  “It was great to see so much interest from our Salons by JC community and also having those people stay with us from start to finish for both days”, stated Mona Echard, Salons by JC Salon Business Coach.

As Salons by JC enters its 22nd year of operations, we look forward to bringing our Salons by JC salon suite community the workshops, events, and conferences needed to ensure the enhancement of their business and growth of the brand.  We received rave reviews from our conference and are preparing to bring you much more in 2021.
