Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT Salons by JC!

Three questions with Derek Correia, owner of Salons by JC.

Why did you start your business?

My wife and I were looking for opportunities close to home, where we could have an impact on our community and support our economy. Salons by JC does this in numerous ways. First off, all we offer an incredible entrepreneurial opportunity to local salon professionals, who can own their own business in one of our studios, and enjoy the freedom and income of entrepreneurship. Secondly, we offer a first class establishment with services from top professionals including stylists, colorists, barbers, nail technicians, estheticians and others.

How many people do you employ?

We have three employees that serve as concierges and property managers, ensuring our guests have a great experience. Importantly, we have over 30 salon professionals who run their own individual businesses within our facility.

Finish this sentence as it relates to your business: I wish I could…

I wish we could get everyone in our community to come in and see the spectacular space we’ve created, and how unique the salon suite experience is. Each of our professionals has their own, unique space and vibe inside their suites, and each one of them is exceptionally talented.

About Salons by JC: In 1997, Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller began their journey to transform the beauty industry one salon suite at a time. Like most young entrepreneurs, they started out with a big idea but had to learn how to start and run a business from scratch. After much perseverance and hard work, one year later, they opened Salons by JC in Dallas, TX in 1998, welcoming beauty and wellness specialists who were ready to break free from the traditional salon model. The company has since moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, where it continues to grow through franchising. Today, Salons by JC has over 87 locations in 24 states and Canada.
