Crystal Hoang: Social Style

Aug 16, 2018

Nail techs are artists. From the sculpting and design to the tedious little details that go into making every manicure unique, it is without question that these beauty professionals are indeed artists. The same can be said about Crystal Hoang, owner and artist at Crystal’s Nail Scene inside Salons by JC Woodbury, east of Minneapolis. Crystal has grown her business through her strategic and engaging social media platforms — particularly Instagram. With clients eager to be featured on her platforms and new clients lining up to be her newest canvas, Crystal shows no sign of slowing down.

A Passion for Art

Passions develop in unique ways, sometimes unexpectedly. This was the case for Crystal’s relationship with nails. Crystal shares that though she had considered cosmetology more of an interest in her early days, it was not something she would have ever considered as a career.

“If you would have asked me in the beginning, I would have said I didn’t really have a passion for nails or cosmetology,” Crystal shares. “My husband’s family initially encouraged me to try to learn more about it, though I didn’t think it aligned with anything I liked to do… or so I thought.”

As Crystal began to explore the world of nails, she began to realize that nail art was not too far off from the hobbies she enjoyed in her free time. A child of the arts, Crystal’s love of painting, sculpting and anything creative found a new way to be expressed — through nail art.  Once Crystal took on nail art as a job, her clientele grew quickly. Knowing that she needed a space to accommodate her rapid growth, she began looking at various locations to set up a space to call her own. That’s when her husband introduced her to Salons by JC.

“I really loved the location. The building was just beautiful compared to other salon suite concepts I had looked at,” Crystal shares. “It reflected the first class experience I wanted my clients to feel when they walked through the doors. I knew before my walls even went up that this was the place I wanted to be.”

Integrating Social Media

With such a visual and artistic niche, it is a no-brainer that Crystal takes to social media, especially Instagram, to share her art with the world. Since establishing herself at Salons by JC, a large part of Crystal’s business plan involves being active on social media and engaging with her social fans.

“My biggest tip is to engage with people online as if they’re already your client,” Crystal shares. “My followers get really involved — they always want new content and want to see my growth.”

According to Crystal, a large part of her social media success has been consistency in posting. She notes that posting new art as frequently as you can keeps your audience checking your profile, anticipating what cool and original art they are going to see next. Along with her audience engagement philosophy, Crystal is growing quickly on her social media channels.

It comes as no surprise that current clients love to have photos of their nail art shared on her platforms.“It makes them feel extra special when I am able to show off their nails online,” says Crystal. “They really do walk out of my place feeling like VIPs.”

Making Big Waves

Crystal isn’t just making waves on social media, but you’ll also find her art featured in Nails Magazine  as well! Her nail art was featured in the publication after entering an online social media competition.

“I saw there was a call for artists to share their work via Facebook. Funny enough, I had missed the deadline by one day and I was pretty bummed about it — but they were nice enough to let me enter anyway, which was really exciting!”

Crystal was able to submit her art for the Mother’s Day edition which featured women in the nail art space that are also mothers. “They did a little feature of me and my kids, as well as other working moms as nail techs. I thought that was really great.”

Most recently, Crystal’s work has been featured again in Nail Pro Magazine for the month of August due to another online competition the publication was hosting. Crystal won a honorable mention for her take on one of history’s most famous art installments, Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” inside the Sistine Chapel, which she recreated on a nail tip.

“There is another competition I entered for the month of October. I can’t say much now, but definitely keep an eye out for that,” Crystal mentioned. “It’s been a fun year for me with the magazine, that’s for sure.”

Community Support

Crystal’s hard work and dedication to her clients shows in her business, though she credits a lot of assistance along the way to her Salons by JC team at Woodbury.

“Dean, Bobby, and Roger are simply angels in disguise,” says Crystal. “From where I was coming from, being in a place where I felt my passion slowly fading, to coming here, I couldn’t have done it without them. They were extremely helpful — they would do anything I need help with at the drop of a hat and in any way they can.”

This comradery is something she says the core team at Salons by JC emulates day in and day out, for every salon suite owner that walks through their doors.

“Our location is a safe and happy one,” Crystal shares in closing. “Everyone is eager to help each other out and we have each other’s backs. It’s a great place to be.”

About Salons by JC: In 1997, Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller began their journey to transform the beauty industry one salon suite at a time. Like most young entrepreneurs, they started out with a big idea but had to learn how to start and run a business from scratch. After much perseverance and hard work, one year later, they opened Salons by JC in Dallas, TX in 1998, welcoming beauty and wellness specialists who were ready to break free from the traditional salon model. The company has since moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, where it continues to grow through franchising. Today, Salons by JC has over 87 locations in 24 states and Canada.  For more information, visit salonsbyjc.com or salonsbyjc.com/franchise
