“Freshen Up” with Mario Askew

Sep 25, 2018

Being a barber is all about providing more than a place for clients to get a trim; it’s also about community. Meet Mario Askew, Salons by JC- South Park’s professional athlete and celebrity client barber. Since August 2014, Mario has been dedicated to delivering the best customer service to every client that sits in his seat.

Freshen Up: A Lifestyle and Attitude

Before becoming a barber, Mario worked as an electrical engineer, where he found that his job was far too dangerous. After a lot of thought, Mario knew he needed to pursue something different. He wanted to click the “refresh” button on his career. This led him to what would eventually become the brand name he lives by now, “Freshen Up.”

“‘Freshen Up’ is about a lifestyle and attitude,” Mario shares. “It doesn’t have so much to do with appearance, it’s about freshening up anything you feel like you need to be better at in life. For example, when I talk to kids about their grades that need improvement, I remind them to freshen up and study a little harder. I inspire my clients to be better men, to be happier, to be healthier, and to continue to grow.”

A New Chapter at Salons by JC

Mario started his new chapter as a barber with Salons by JC-South Park back in January of 2017 and was one of the first few tenants at this location. Both he and his clientele love everything about the environment he works in.

“I love the freedom and 24-hour access. My clients love the exclusiveness of me having my own suite, as opposed to being in a barbershop atmosphere where when you sit down everyone can hear your conversation. My professional clients love the private atmosphere because it allows them to share things with me that they don’t want everyone else to hear.”

As one old barbershop saying goes “a barbershop is not a hair salon. You don’t go in trying to impress anyone. It’s a place just to talk, to hang out with the fellows, talk about sports, and kick back.” This is the philosophy Mario runs his business by—and it’s one his clients truly appreciate.

“Barbers do more than just cut hair,” Mario says. “We are everything from psychologists to comedians for our clients. We are a relief to the male community, so they appreciate the one-on-one experience of a private suite.”

Family Man, Entrepreneur, Professional

Setting aside time to enjoy family is also extremely important for Mario and he loves that Salons by JC allows for him to be a barber and still allow time for him to be a family man as well.  “Some companies have turned barber shops into a corporate atmosphere and don’t allow for schedule flexibility. Both my clients and my time are very valuable, so I’m very thankful that being in Salons by JC allows me to make my own schedule, an entrepreneur, an industry professional, and be a family man as well.”

Salons by JC loves and appreciates the heart and effort you put into your craft, Mario! We wish you the best as your talents and passion continue to grow with us!

About Salons by JC: In 1997, Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller began their journey to transform the beauty industry one salon suite at a time. Like most young entrepreneurs, they started with a big idea but had to learn how to start and run a business from scratch. After much perseverance and hard work, one year later, they opened Salons by JC in Dallas, TX in 1998, welcoming beauty and wellness specialists who were ready to break free from the traditional salon model. The company has since moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, where it continues to grow through franchising. Today, Salons by JC has over 90 locations in 26 states and Canada.
