The Dynamic Duo at Salons by JC Burnsville

Princeton and Diana Kokku are no strangers to fast growth through hard work to make their own success.  Prior to venturing into the franchise world, Princeton garnered his own success as the owner of an IT consulting firm. His firm quickly grew into the 8th fastest growing company in Minnesota, as recognized by the Minneapolis Business Journal. The business, which Princeton started from his home, is now operating from a 25,000 square foot office suite.

In February 2013, Princeton began looking for opportunities to diversify and saw franchising as a great opportunity.   After exploring multiple opportunities with a franchise consultant, Princeton stumbled upon the salon suite model of Salons by JC. Educating himself about the company, the structure, and overall mission, he knew this was the right fit.

A key element that stood out about the Salons by JC model was the opportunity to help other business owners get their start, operate independently and find success, just like he did.

“I was drawn to the model, but I really connected with and trust the team at Salons By JC,” Princeton says. “They’re genuinely invested in the success of every franchisee. Everyone in this community is willing to share the lessons they’ve learned. The personal touch that the Concierge brings to the salon is unique and brilliant. There is no question that I made the right choice,” Princeton says.

After 100 days of construction, finding the perfect space and signing a lease, the Salons by JC Burnsville location opened its doors on July 1, 2018. This was the beginning of a story that still has plenty of chapters left.

Rapid growth

Diana utilized her marketing background in collaboration with the in-house marketing team to create an exceptionally smooth salon suite owner on-boarding process.

“I’ve been handling all of the marketing and suite leasings, while Princeton was in charge of the retail center lease and construction,” Diana shares. “We’ve had a few moments where we had to remind each other to stay in our own lanes, but mostly it’s been a lot of fun working together!”

Salons by JC Burnsville has had very good traction from the beginning. Their location proudly opened at 35% occupancy in a large space with 47 total suites.

“Salons by JC locations are truly the best product in the market when compared to other salon suites concepts. The marketing team at Salons by JC is very knowledgeable and worked with us to customize the messaging for our market; which was another advantage over our competition,” Diana says.

Reaping Rewards

“We did a soft opening on July 1st and that was a proud moment. Seeing the finished salon with all of the beautiful finishes, our glowing and excited suite owners, and being there with my wife and new baby —Adley— and our families; it was a huge accomplishment,” said Princeton

Princeton and Diana said that the most rewarding part of this process has been hearing comments about the beauty of the salon. “Several guests have asked the salon suite owners if they’re going to raise their rates now that they’re in such a high-end place. This was a great compliment!” they said.

“I’ve really enjoyed meeting and getting to know all of the salon suite owners. During construction, we would meet at Starbucks and I’d hear about their business and show them the floor plans.  Each time it felt like I walked away with a new friend. We truly love our salon suite owners, ” Diana said.

Both Princeton and Diana agree that the experience has been such a joy to them. They have big plans to keep expanding with their community at Salons by JC. Be sure to stay tuned to see what this dynamic duo has in store.

Instagram: Your Digital Portfolio

One thing that can set you on the path to success is having a solid plan on what social media platform will best suit you and your salon business. As beauty professionals, a picture speaks volumes.  It grabs attention, creates engagement and showcases your work. Your clients will enthusiastically share your posts since their image is featured. This will create a wave of interest in your business.  Ultimately, you will start gaining new clients and spark the interest of others.

Meet Sandra Garcia, nail artist extraordinaire.  The TXManiMuse was booked solid for 2018 in June and began booking clients for 2019, a very rare feat for a nail technician.  Today, Sandra will share some of her top Instagram tips on building her salon business, creating her unique voice, and how to stand out in a sea of hashtags.

Broadcasting Your Unique Story on Instagram

Instagram has helped me increase my clientele tremendously over the past 5 years.  There are so many tools to utilize that will help you present your profile page in your own unique style.  A huge part of being successful on Instagram is expressing yourself and who you are. This makes people feel like they know you and they WANT to follow you.  I’ve learned through Instagram there are peak times to post (having a business account allows you to view your analytics which is very helpful).

Creating interaction with an audience through IG Stories

I like to change up my posts.  Rather than posting regular pictures of my work. I started creating collages of my work and asking the audience, “ Which is your fav?”  This started to get people reacting and responding which got them looking forward to my next post. I also incorporated the use of Instagram Stories and personalized each story post.  I began seeing an increase in views as each day went by. There are a lot of fun tools that you can use on Instagram Stories which make it fun. Having the ability to now follow and search via a hashtag has also been a game changer.  Make sure you use hashtags in all your captions to gain the best Instagram experience for you and your business.

Be a creative storyteller through your photos and use of trending hashtags

13,600 Followers and Growing

When I see that I have 13.6K followers it still amazes me that THAT many people chose to follow me.  I feel fortunate that when I first started out, I landed a news segment right away in 2013. That really helped my following grow.  Throughout the next two years, I was offered two more news segments and my following kept growing. Networking and putting yourself out there are very important as you grow your business.

I have also collaborated with other nail techs at various events throughout Texas that have increased my following.  When I work with them they will tag me in their posts which helps increase my visibility and in turn, people follow me.  Of course, word of mouth by my clients, former clients and friends is where it all started.

Booking for 2019: Loyalty Matters

How did I get booked for the year 2018? I have loyal customers! I am so grateful for my clients.  They know how fast I get booked and they book in advance every time they come for their appointment.  This year, I booked up quicker than usual. So once they saw that, they didn’t risk it and made sure to book right after their appointment with me.  It’s key to get their next appointment set up before they get up from your chair. This practice helped me stay booked and before I knew it, I was booked through December.

Working away at an event

Instagram is the only social media platform that I use at the moment for my business.  I had a Facebook Business Page but didn’t see the amount of interaction that I did on Instagram, so I chose to stick to Instagram. Instagram is also my main source for booking appointments. I’m old school and I still write my appointments in my appointment book.  This method has worked well for me and my business.

Advice for Other Beauty Professionals

Use Instagram to all its advantages.  There is so much on there to utilize. Every year it grows and gains more features that can help you grow as a business owner.  I would also like to say, be yourself. Don’t try to become a big name you see on social media. Make your own page unique like you.  Look at me! I’m just a girl from the Southside of San Antonio that loved doing nails and has turned that passion into a successful career throughout the years.  Thanks to the support of my followers, loyal clients and Salons by JC.

Sharing my talent, making your nails shine

Uniqueness, passion, and determination have made Sandra Garcia one of the top, if not, the top nail artist in the South Texas area.  Known for her works of nail art, the TX Mani Muse remains true to her roots and is appreciative of the support she has received from Salons by JC.  She is one of the many reasons we are the #1 ranked Salon Suite franchise in the industry.  Sandra’s suite can be found at Salons by JC Huebner Commons alongside her nail partner Megan Davis.  Together, they are empowering one another and inspiring an entirely new wave of eager nail technicians.

Lily Bray: Prevailing Passion Leads to Success

“At one point in time, I had thought that maybe doing hair was not in the cards for me. But I kept going, I had lots of support and I just had no fear.”

Change in Events…and The Weather

Lily Bray has been with Salons by JC for almost four years and has been practicing the art of hair since 1991. In 2013, the salon she was working at was in the direct path of destructive tornadoes that hit Moore, Oklahoma.

“Before these large tornadoes came through the city of Moore, I was working a booth rental in an open floor salon. I remember sitting and waiting, hoping for walk-ins or some type of advertisement that might get more people to come in our direction.”

When the tornado hit, Lily lost all the tools and products vital to her business. Everything she had worked hard to collect was now gone. She soon found herself looking for another place to practice her art. This is when she toyed with the notion of owning her own salon. “I had bounced around to a couple of different salons trying to find a good home to go to, and it just so happened that the Salons by JC Moore location had recently opened. I received a postcard in the mail one day and came in the next day for a tour.”

Lily went from hoping for clients to come through the door to having illustrious growth in her professional career and now growing her own business.

“Going from nothing, where everything is taken away from you, to being so busy – I feel like I’m ready to have an assistant to help me relieve some of the work load”.

Staying Inspired

Lily loves owning her own salon and especially enjoys all the people she meets on a daily basis.

“There is something special once the client sits in your chair. You suddenly become their therapist or psychiatrist. You start opening up to a complete stranger. When you transform the way their makeup is done or their hair; they leave feeling like a new person. It makes you feel so good because you helped someone that day.”

To remain creative and evolve with the changes in the hair industry, Lily turns to other sources of inspiration for her work. “When I start to get in a rut, I attend a hair show or an education class. Something away from the actual salon. Getting additional education opens up your eyes to different techniques.”

Helping Others

As Lily grows in her craft, so do her dreams. Lily would like to one day own her own salon to further help those who are looking to learn and achieve.

“I would love to be able to have a nice opportunity for future stylists to come in. When I meet somebody who doesn’t have the experience that I do, I am always willing to help them with little tricks and little things that they can do to get their business up and going.”

“You can never learn too much. And I think that is what helps me keep going forward.”

We admire and appreciate the tenacity of Lily Bray, and are proud to have her as a part of the Salons by JC network. We wish her continued success in Moore, OK!

Crofton Location Makes #3 for Jim McGuiness

Deciding to take on a franchise is not always an easy decision but for some, the decision is clear.

Jim McGuiness, a Salons by JC franchise owner who operates multiple franchises alongside his two brothers, recently opened his third Salons by JC location in Crofton, MD.

When Jim first entertained the idea of franchising a business, he was eager to find a good opportunity, but like any good businessman, he had his standards. Jim was looking to be a part of an industry disrupting franchise he could bring to his community that also provided premium amenities the competition did not.

“We were looking for what we thought was an interesting, compelling business model and Salons by JC met and exceeded the standards we were looking for,” Jim says.

Once Jim was hooked on what Salons by JC had to offer, his brother decided to make it official and meet with the Salons by JC corporate team. After his initial discussion, he was immediately impressed. Jim and his team charged on full speed ahead and opened their first Salons by JC location in April of 2016, followed by another location just a year later in April of 2017, and most recently, their third location – Salons by JC – Crofton in Gambrills, Maryland– in May of 2018.

With his extensive background in accounting and finance, Jim is well equipped to successfully build on the unique business model Salons by JC already has in place. Before his journey into the world of franchising, Jim worked for a large financial firm in New York City at the executive level. During his 30 years at the financial firm, Jim was accustomed to handling all aspects of finance, operations, pricing, and negations with business contracts.

“I had never had experience with a salon business, but at the end of the day, that’s not what really mattered to our team. It’s more about dealing with the right people, with the right vision, and the right location.”

Though financial management is his background, Jim finds that the most interesting part of working with Salons by JC is the many roles he gets to play outside of “franchisee.”

“What I find appealing, especially after coming from a large company to a smaller partnership, is that running the day-to-day requires many hats which I actually really enjoy,” Jim shares.

From being involved and helping build a community of stylists and suite owners, to working closely with location concierges to ensure each community is well oiled and operating efficiently, Jim has found enjoyment in all his many roles and being a part of a larger vision.

Trust and Growth

For Jim and his team, the decision to work with Salons by JC became clear after his brother met with the Salons by JC corporate team. Jim recalls that what solidified the decision to take the next step was the core values Salons by JC exuded and lived by.

“With some of the other franchisors we had met with, we didn’t have a high degree of trust or confidence within the company,” Jim said. “We found what we were looking for in the Salons by JC team. We knew they had something special.”

In addition to Salons by JC values, the unique management model was one that Jim felt would prove very successful.

“We were looking to get involved with a business that was not heavy in the requirement for the management of people,” Jim shares. “Getting to work with one employee that is always on-site, the concierge, allows us to build a core team that is closely connected, and we found that very appealing as well.”

Jim looks to continue to grow successfully with Salons by JC by opening more locations in an effective and intelligent way.

“We want to make sure that we’re investing in future growth, not only for our locations but the individual suite owners we work with every day.”

Getting to Know You

Interaction is a gateway for communication. Jim often interacts, garners advice from, and brainstorms with other franchise owners through the Salons by JC franchisee portal.

“I find the portal extremely helpful as a sounding board where people can post questions and other franchisees can contribute with their perspective and experience,” Jim says. It’s an extremely valuable tool that Salons by JC provides.”

In addition to the interactions Jim has with fellow location owners, he also has the chance to interact and engage with his salon suite owners, almost daily.

“I live in New Jersey, and I have franchised one Salons by JC location in Connecticut and two in Maryland,” Jim says. “It’s a great arrangement so I may be anywhere from two to three hours away from any one of our sites.”

Though Jim makes every effort to visit when he can, he can rest assured that even when he is not available, the salon community is in capable hands with their respective concierges.

“I am heavily reliant on our capable concierge managers. However, when I am on site I try to interact or meet with as many salon suite owners as I can. I try my best to get to know them, what they do and what we can do to make Salons by JC the best environment it can be. I’m always open to hearing the opinions of everyone we work with so we can stay in tune with their perspectives and needs, and create constant improvement.

To Those Who Take the Risk

Jim finds inspiration every day in the Salons by JC community at all of his locations. From a suite owner’s first walkthrough to the day they sign on, to growing their business alongside Salons by JC, Jim finds inspiration in being a part of a community that allows small business owners to thrive in their own independence.

“Business owners who are willing to make that leap towards independence know there is a risk component, and I find their constant fearlessness really inspirational.” Jim shares. “It’s inspirational to know they are confident in us, in our mission, and trust that we are doing the right thing for them and their businesses. We hope they know we will always do our best to help them navigate that risk of entrepreneurship and navigate the unknown, together.”

Salons by JC to see record revenue from franchises, president says

By   – Editorial intern, Dallas Business Journal
 Updated

As Salons by JC celebrates two decades in business, it’s expecting to exceed $30 million in revenue.

Founded in September 1998 by Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller, the company is a salon suite concept where professionals can rent space to operate their own beauty business.

Starting from its first location in North Dallas at the corner of Coit and Campbell roads, Salons by JC has since grown from 32 salon suite owners in 1998 to 3,200 suite owners in 2018. The company has also moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, and now operates 95 stores in 26 U.S. states and Canada.

Steve Griffey, who took over his role from his father, Jack Griffey, spoke with the Dallas Business Journal about the company’s growth through franchising and how it plans to empower today’s salon suite owners.

What were the early years of Salons by JC like?

Early on, it was trying to figure out how to recruit beauty professionals to come into a space and be independent. There’s been chair rental around forever, where (beauty professionals) would rent a chair or (have) a commission situation. (The company’s founders) were trying to figure out the value proposition to pay a little bit more and have your own room that you have 24/7 access to. It was certainly interesting. I would say Dallas is ground zero for the whole salon suite concept, so the competition revved up pretty quickly in Dallas, as well. You were never going to be the shiny, new penny, so you had to figure out a way that you could compete at a higher level without just having a new facility. We brought the service level in, where we have a concierge on site. It helps with leasing and facility management, but it also helps with marketing assistance and a variety of other business services that we offer to the suite owners that lease from us.

Did you start to see similar salon suite models emerge?

In Dallas, you’re pushing 300 different salon suites in the Metroplex, which is unbelievable. There’s not another market in the country that has even half that many.

What sort of growth has Salons by JC seen since 1998?

We’ve grown our corporate stores (by) about one every year and a half. In 2008, we decided to start franchising. We made enough mistakes that we figured we could help some people avoid. We managed to sell four or five franchises over the course of three or four years. Then, we found a sales group that helped us in 2012, and we sold the rights to salons across the country.

What are your strongest markets besides Dallas?

The Southeast has been great to us, (especially) Atlanta, Miami. We’re in 26 states now, so there are pockets in the Northeast. New York has been awesome for us. We opened a store in Manhattan about a year and a half ago that’s done well. In the Northeast … people are used to working for somebody else. That’s just the culture. If you come to the South, and if you come to the West, people have a little more of the entrepreneurial spirit, and they all want to own their own business. What we do gives them the opportunity to do it. It fits into the whole culture.

What is driving the growth you see today?

For us, it’s been franchising and being able to find partners across the country that believe in the concept. Our existing franchisees have had great success and now, they’re opening their second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth store. We’ll push over hundred stores in the next six months.

What makes Salons by JC different than what you see in a lot of other salon suites is the person that we put inside the salon. We’re starting to leverage that and go deeper with their education. We just rolled out in June an “Empowering You” program for the suite owners that we lease to. We can’t teach people how to cut hair and color hair, but we can help them run their business at a higher level. We can help them save. We can help them find the best option to buy a home. We can help them plan for retirement. We can help them leverage technology to be more efficient with their time and make more money. We want to come alongside them and help them with that.
