Staying Polished and Stylish with Megan Davis

Jun 14, 2018

Megan Davis’ first career choice was to become a nurse. As she began her nursing studies, she lost interest when one of her instructors made changes to the course certifications. But life has a funny way of presenting your destined path to you. Megan took up polishing her nails as a hobby. “I was pregnant with my oldest son and began polishing my nails,” stated Megan.  Eventually family and friends started asking her to paint their nails for them when they noticed her talent for nail art. “I didn’t charge for the nail art because I just enjoyed doing it so much”.

The Destined Path – Nails

After searching for a school that would accommodate her schedule, she enrolled and finished the nail program in a record 7 months, which is a huge accomplishment for a part-time night school student. “I was hired by a salon before I even completed the program, and I was super excited about the new gig!” Megan said. Graduating from school and having a job waiting for you is any student’s dream. Megan was excited about her early graduation and job offer, but, as she soon found out, things were not what they seemed.

A Rough Start to a Blossoming Career

“Unfortunately, the salon was not what I thought it would be. I wasn’t allowed to perform certain nail services, because I was ‘new’. I got stuck doing pedicures for over 7 months,” stated Megan. The owner of the salon also restricted Megan to do only acrylic nails if she was requested by the client. “Even when I would get requested, the owner still tried to talk the client out of having me work on her nails. This made me hate working in that salon so much that I almost gave up doing what I love,” stated Megan. Trying to figure out her next move because she was so unhappy, Megan reached out to another salon owner about a nail tech position she had seen. “I made the call to the new salon. The following week I went in and did a complete set on my Mom and was hired on the spot!” said an elated Megan.

She loved working at that salon; she was receiving the respect she deserved from the owner, and she was also getting to do what she loved…nails. A year into her journey, she made the decision to try something new. “The 50/50 commission wasn’t cutting it for me, and as much I loved that salon, I needed to make a change for myself,” Megan emphasized.

Making the Move to Salons by JC

After working briefly out of her house to increase her income, she made the decision to become a Salon Suite Owner at Salons by JC – Huebner Commons with her friend and former co-worker, Sandra Garcia. “I was terrified about the idea of leasing a salon suite. What if I don’t make money? What if my clients don’t follow me?” stated Megan. Looking back almost two years later, she asks herself why she worried so much. “Salons by JC has been amazing for my business and for me. My clients love it and so do I!”, stated Megan. “I never imagined I could own my own successful salon.”

The Perks of being a Salon Suite Owner

After working in a salon with tan walls, Megan knew that her salon suite was not going to be boring. “Being in the industry, you have to set yourself apart from everyone, and you have to be distinct,” Megan said. Working for herself and setting her own hours has been very beneficial to her career and her success. “In my eyes, nails are tiny canvases. I love painting small details on nails because it’s so fun! When you leave my chair, I want you to feel 100 times better than you did when you first sat down,” stated Megan.

As Her Clientele Grows so Does Her Popularity

Having her own business has definitely opened up many amazing opportunities for Megan.  Earlier this year, she assisted another local nail tech working for a popular salon in NYC- Chill House at SXSW. The event was all about female empowerment and featured female business owners. Megan was also invited to work at the JMBLYA Music Festival VIP Section, known as the “Fur Coat,” which provides festival nails for a few ladies between the various performances of the night.

Congratulations to Megan Davis! As her career continues to soar, she is also venturing into graphic arts. After all, what she does on her tiny canvases would look great on larger canvases, bringing life to homes and offices.

About Salons by JC: In 1997, Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller began their journey to transform the beauty industry one salon suite at a time. Like most young entrepreneurs, they started out with a big idea but had to learn how to start and run a business from scratch. After much perseverance and hard work, one year later, they opened Salons by JC in Dallas, TX in 1998, welcoming beauty and wellness specialists who were ready to break free from the traditional salon model. The company has since moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, where it continues to grow through franchising.
