From Shears to Paint: Art Comes in All Shapes

From Shears to Paint: Art Comes in All Shapes

Within the walls of the original Salons by JC in Dallas, Texas, you will find a unique gem called Dallas Pro Salon. A special spot where you can get your hair done, view original pieces of art, and receive beauty services from the artist himself. Billy Luke, a Salons by JC salon suite owner, hangs his abstract paintings for the enjoyment of his customers and for anyone who happens by.

Adding Some Color

“Until last year, I had never really painted. I grabbed a canvas, and I just discovered it! I have been a musician my whole life, and I have been in the cosmetology world. You could say I have been an artist pretty much, but I didn’t discover that I had this hidden talent until recently.” A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Billy Luke has been painting for nine months and has seen some of his paintings successfully displayed in the White Rock Hills Library.

“I am hoping a museum will be next, which would be pretty cool!” Billy shares. His inspiration comes from originality, and, surprisingly, he is not a trained painter. Everything he produces is based on creating something that has never been seen before. “I just let the painting tell me what to do. My favorite color is orange, so I include a little bit of that color in a lot of my art.”

There is always something new to view at Billy’s “Salon/Gallery,” as he likes to call it. He frequently switches out the paintings in his suite and some are even sold to his clientele.

Billy’s art has its own appeal for both his clients and others alike. “My clients love it, and other salon suite owners’ clients love it, too. Everyone stops at my window to see what paintings are being featured on my walls. It has become pretty interesting.” Billy’s creative energy has helped him paint over 150 paintings just in the last nine months, averaging about seven to ten paintings per week.

A Way of Life

Billy joined Salons by JC about 10 years ago after seeing how Salons by JC gave him the control of being his own boss and allowed for positive growth in his professional  career.

Billy became a licensed cosmetologist back in 1989 and has been working in the beauty industry since then. Billy has also considered becoming a Salons by JC franchisee, which he sees as an awesome opportunity. “This is my way of life, and I will probably be doing it my whole life. I would just like to keep up with the program and add the artwork to turn it into a gallery to have some extra income and freedom.”

For Generations to Come

For all the years Billy has been in the beauty business, he has had the privilege of retaining longtime clients. “I want to keep enjoying all the new people that I meet,” Billy says. Clients that once sat in his chair as kids are now bringing their own children to Billy. “All the people I have seen for almost 30 years now are still coming to me, which is just wonderful!” Billy shares. “I’ve cut hair for fathers, their kids, and their grand kids. I have watched whole family trees grow.” With shears and paint, Billy looks forward to creating art on whatever canvas comes his way.

About Salons by JC: In 1997, Jack Griffey and Cecil Miller began their journey to transform the beauty industry one salon suite at a time. Like most young entrepreneurs, they started out with a big idea but had to learn how to start and run a business from scratch. After much perseverance and hard work, one year later, they opened Salons by JC in Dallas, TX in 1998, welcoming beauty and wellness specialists who were ready to break free from the traditional salon model. The company has since moved its headquarters from Dallas to San Antonio, where it continues to grow through franchising. Today, Salons by JC has over 87 locations in 24 states and Canada.  For more information, visit salonsbyjc.com or salonsbyjc.com/franchise
